Sad thing about football. Rules change year to year and seems even professional announcers don't have a clue what they actually are.

here is rule

It's a live ball, it doesn't have to touch the ground.

we had an onside kick voided because ball never hit ground.***

I thought we had an onside kick called back this season because it never hit the ground.

In high school if the ball does not touch the ground and goes over 10 yards if the kicking team plays the ball it is an automatic fair catch for the defense and the receiving team has the option of taking the ball at the point it was touched or take a penalty and rekick. Not sure of the NCAA rule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thought that was the college rule also. So who lobbied for

Jan 12, 2016, 12:32 AM

That rule change? And when?

Re: The onside kick WAS illegal!!!!!

Jan 12, 2016, 12:32 AM

The rule on fair catch calls on onside kicks is brain meltingly stupid. Basically you should have 1 person up front call fair catch on every kick to prevent that, the way the rule works. We got hosed against the coots but all within the rules. We just played sh1tty special teams against Bama and let an opposing player run under the kick unopposed. The reason most onside kicks bounce off the ground is because no one in their right mind would think you could just lob it to your own guys without being blocked...

On a kickoff you still need to field the fair catch. Kearse was out of position.

It's over. Let it go, we sound like coots

I looked it up, says nothing about hitting the ground

Touching and Recovery
of a Free Kick
ARTICLE 3
No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:
1 It touches a Team B player (Exception:
Rules 6-1-4 and 6-5-1-b);
2 It breaks the plane of and remains beyond Team B’s restraining line
(Exception:Rule 6-4-1) (A 2-12-5-I); or
3 It touches any player, the ground, an official or anything beyond Team
B’s restraining line

We just got beat. Special teams is an area we can improve a lot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where does it say you can call Fair Catch on kickoff?***

Jan 12, 2016, 12:48 AM

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then why not just call for a fair catch on every on-sides attempt?

Jan 12, 2016, 12:48 AM [ in reply to Re: I looked it up, says nothing about hitting the ground ]

Nm

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, it was not....

Jan 12, 2016, 12:43 AM

look up the rule.

The other team can catch the ball in the air as long as it goes the 10 yds. The receiving team has the option to call a fair catch. If the fair catch is called, the ball belongs to the receiving team, even if they were not in a position to fair catch. Fair catches are called all the time when the ball is not catchable. I ensures that you keep the ball if the ball is not touched by the receiving team.

The kick must be a free kick (a kickoff, or free kick after a safety, but not the rare fair catch kick).
The kick must cross the receiving team's restraining line (normally 10 yards in front of the kicking team's line), unless the receiving team touches the ball before that line.
The kicking team may only recover and retain possession of the kicked ball, but not advance it.
The kicking team must not interfere with an attempt by a player of the receiving side to catch the ball on the fly. The ball does not have to touch the ground

And on onside kicks, receiving teams can call for a fair catch if the ball is driven into the ground and bounces only once.

The one thing that none of us paid any attention to is
Blocking by Team A players before they are eligible to touch the ball on an
on-side kick. No player on team A (kicking team) may block opposing player until the ball has gone 10 yards
