The ncaa rule for onside kicks..

Jan 12, 2016, 2:17 AM

Notice the OR after #2...which means for the kicking team to recover, the ball has to go 10 yds OR touches the ground, ref or any player on receiving team after ball has gone 10 yds. The call on the field was correct

Touching and Recovery of a Free Kick
ARTICLE 3. a. No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:
1. It touches a Team B player (Exception: Rules 6-1-4 and 6-5-1-b);
2. It breaks the plane of and remains beyond Team B’s restraining line (Exception: Rule 6-4-1) (A.R. 2-12-5-I); OR
3. It touches any player, the ground, an official or anything beyond Team B’s restraining line.
Thereafter, all players of Team A become eligible to touch, recover or catch the kick.

and

Eligibility to Block
ARTICLE 12
No Team A player may block an opponent until Team A is eligible to touch a free-kicked ball. (A.R. 6-1-3-II)

It has to go 10 yards regardless for them to recover.

not if the receiving team touches the ball before it goes 10 yds

correct, but if someone would have called for a fair catch, before the alabama player caught it (prior to it ever touching the ground), it would have been a penalty in which we could have elected to take the ball at the spot

People...y'all are missing the whole point. Dabo did not tell the truth in his post game presser..he told a fib to not look like a baby or sore loser. Cuz that's how our coach rolls. It's clear he was saying 'he was offsides!' to the refs on the field...and he's 100% dead right. Go look at the video of it online. Pause it just as the kickers foot is meeting or just about to meet the ball. While I grant you it's close (not real close..but close), the Tide player who eventually received the kick...IS AT LEAST A 1/2 YRD OFFSIDES. Look at it..see what y'all think. I know what I'm seeing, I feel.

that pic does not show the ball in the air and kearse running toward the ball. By rule, as long as he is running toward the ball within 15 yds, he can call a fair and the kicking team can not catch it, must allow for the chance to catch it. Same think for punts

correct***

you're wrong somebody already posted the rule, quit defending cheaters***

rule I posted is straight from the ncaa..

Jan 12, 2016, 2:44 AM

the person that posted it earlier did not include the OR. They made the rule look like the ball had to hit the ground, which in incorrect.

Sorry my friend, but at least 2 of the 3 conditions must be met before Team A can legally touch the ball. If they are not met, the ball is dead when Team A touches it and the receiving team gains possession.

Article 3.a 1 must be met AND 2 or 3 must also be met before it can be touched.

ARTICLE 3. a. No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:

1 and 2 or 3 are met.

Hate it happened, but the ball should have been dead when the guy caught it and we should have been given possession. It is exactly what happened to us last year.

You do realize there is a difference between a kick and a free kick, don't you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that is not what happened last yr

Jan 12, 2016, 3:26 AM [ in reply to Re: The ncaa rule for onside kicks.. ]

the coot player called for a fair catch. We did not do that tonight. Calling a fair catch insures (unless the ball is fumbled after a fair catch) that the receiving teams gets the ball.

the number one is referring to the rule that the ball had not touched traveled 10 yds and a player on teh receiving teams touches the ball

???

Jan 12, 2016, 3:30 AM [ in reply to Re: The ncaa rule for onside kicks.. ]

I may be delirious because its late, but you're saying #1 has to be met? So what you're saying is if the defending team doesn't touch the ball, it can't be recovered by the kicking team. The only logical way to read that is the "or" is assumed to be after the first article too. Only one of the articles has to be met. The original poster is correct.
