The QB Dilemma ... Some Suggestions (Long)

Dabo has said that QB battle may well go into the season. Frankly … it must! And it needs to be transparent!

Here’s why:

I assume that our players hold both, KB and TL, in high regard; however, the majority of our players have been “in the trenches” with KB last year, and his leading the team to a 12-1 regular season, a State Championship, an ACC Championship and the #1 ranking in the CFP last year would seem, at least to me, to make him the “sentimental favorite” in the locker room. There is also a strong “KB camp” within the fan base that feels this same way.

At least one pundit has suggested that we could go through the year utilizing both QB’s, depending upon the situation … and Florida proved a decade or so ago that a “situational” QB system can work … but is this ideal? If the thought is that KB would be used, say, in the red zone, then this is similar to a “wildcat” option, which relies principally on the run. If KB is used only in such situations, or for a “change of pace”, then for all practical purposes he is not THE “starting” QB.

While Clemson could conceivably win it all this year with KB under center, we witnessed his shortcomings in last year’s playoff game … AND … in the spring game. In short, if a good defense stacks the box, plays our receivers tight off the line, and blitzes, then, assuming that 1) the OL and RB can give KB a few seconds or he can extend the play and 2) one or two receivers can create separation beyond 10 yards, then that defensive strategy could be beaten with the pass … if only KB could hit those receivers. Unfortunately, we know the likely outcome, as we have seen it before … with our own eyes.

On the other hand, when we watched the Spring Game … and yes, I know, it was just a spring game … it was very evident that TL could not only extend plays with his feet, but actually run for big yardage and, most importantly, hit the long ball. Now he hasn’t proved that in a game that counts, but the prognosis for that happening is excellent. What our eyes saw simply cannot be denied! Seeming to come to KB’s defense, Dabo said that it (the Spring Game) was just one of 15 (spring) practices … and by itself, should not be the sole determinant in who starts in September.

I would suggest that instead of looking at that Spring Game as the 15th of 15 spring practices, it be looked at as the first of the QB auditions that would continue into the fall practices, which would likely include two scrimmages, and where the last “practice” would be the Furman game. The vast majority of us fans will not be privy to what happens daily in fall practices, but the players will routinely see with their own eyes how the two QB’s perform. We, as fans, will just have the benefit of “reports”; however, the rationale for any decision that Dabo makes when it comes to selecting a “starting” QB must be (made) evident to the fan base … otherwise, one “camp” in the fan base could potentially be alienated.

So to facilitate this, the OC’s could effectively use the (two) scrimmages and the Furman game to call and run a broad array of plays for a predetermined number of offensive series for each of the QB contenders, maybe even including Chase Brice, which would incorporate an emphasis on the all-important “long ball”. For each QB these plays would be run with the first team, as rotations from the 2-deep would naturally occur in a game situation. While the initial plays for each QB could be scripted, play calls will deviate from the ###### based on field situations. Each QB needs to get a similar number of reps.

After the scrimmages, the QB stats should be well-publicized, including the usual Passing Attempts vs. Completions/Interceptions (further broken down by Yardage of the pass thrown, Yards After Catch and “Drops” ) … and Rushing Attempts/ Yards. The fan base can then begin processing these statistics. Then, using the same methodology in the Furman game, the fan base will not only have an additional set of game stats to evaluate, but will also be able to reconcile the stats with what they see for themselves.

One final thought: Dabo might want to consider “quietly” arranging for an “independent third party” … like a Trent Dilfer … to observe the two fall scrimmages and give a subjective analysis of the QB’s to augment their stats. (Another subjective analysis will surely be offered by the “color commentator” used in the Furman TV broadcast. This concept of using a third- party analysis of the scrimmages could be a double-edge sword, however: It could suggest that the coaches are not capable of making the appropriate evaluations … OR … it could be used by the coaches as just “another factor” in making and possibly supporting any pending decision). I would view it as the latter.

In the final analysis, the only way that players AND FANS will accept KB or TL “starting” over the other will be to “see” the process play out for themselves. The above recommendations would provide for the necessary transparency and help the fan base “buy into” Dabo’s decision.

Fire away!

You put way too much effort into this. It's not a dilemma, it's Dabo's decision, doesn't matter what the fans think. Seems like your post is simply your way of coming to grips with whoever Dabo chooses. it's not complicated.

And it does not need to be transparent just so you as a fan can understand Dabo's choices. Dabo will do what is best for the team. In that process he will protect the players as much as possible and also not give intel to our opponents. It is not necessary that we as fans know every single detail nor do we have to agree with what we see.

I agree. Dabo is indebted to put what he thinks is the best team on the field, not what anyone else thinks. So far, it's worked out just fine. And he is not in any way obligated to divulge intel to anyone. He and the other coaches have plenty of eyes and ears in order to evaluate. They are being paid big money to make the decisions and don't need any outside advice. Our country is run on democratic principles. Football teams are not. The coach(es) rule. If they do a lousy job they will be deposed. Dabo and company will be reigning, IMO, for quite some time to come.

He already chose KB

Huh?

He said KB is the starter leaving spring but we’re talking about the course of the season.

He did? Didn't realize it was October already... Wow, where did the fall camp and first games go?

He listed him for post spring... That doesnt mean he'll have it coming out of fall or by game 4. That'll get dictated by performance and game play.

Let’s give everyone a participation trophy so no one gets their feeling hurt about a decision that our head coach will spend 100’s of hours making on the long hot practice field of fall camp and practice.

CDS and his staff don't need an outside source to decide which QB to play. Unbelievably stupid suggestion.

You really don’t think the coaches brake every practice. F Trent what does he have to do with Clemson or college football. That maybe the dumbest post I’ve read on the dead horse

No, you're the one that really doesn't get it, but that's ok. It takes all kinds.

Don’t know what is wrong- sorry for blank posts! But you don’t get it. The players themselves will know who should be starting based on practices and I can’t imagine Dabo picking someone different.

Interesting, BUT No Dilemma, No Transparency

and certainly don't let a guy that's seen one QB option in shorts for less than one week make the decision!
