The bama comment was
In reference to their title game loss in 2010 or whenever. They said the same thing soon after the game that they were way away from elite at that point but closer now and I would agree, mainly because they didn’t belong in that bama game at all. They still have work to do no doubt, they were probably the 6th best team not 3rd or 4th. Less insulted by this than the constant whining of 3 loss Dawg team who’s ridiculous rally cry seems to be ‘we’re number 2!”

Thank you. I think you've explained what Swarbrick was trying to say. However, I don't understand why people don't seem to want to admit that we didn't play you any worse than Alabama did, in terms of the score. And we might very well have beaten Oklahoma last year. (Do you think they would have put up more points on us than you did? And conversely, do you seriously think their defense could have held us under 30?)

I wouldn't put them in 6th place, and maybe they were better than Oklahoma, too. But I'll settle for 5th. You Clemson fans know all about being called overrated when in fact you're underrated, and getting closer and closer to that day when your team proves itself to be among the best. That's the feeling I have right now about ND.

Notre Dame's Defense played Clemson much better than Alabama's in the playoffs. Clemson moved the ball at will all night against Bama. While the Good Guys in Orange did score 30 on Notre Dame. The 30 points put up were mostly on big long Scoring plays. I'd say the Domers definitely deserved to be in the playoffs last season. Clemson dominated the playoffs beating Notre Dame by 27 & Bama by 28 (taking a knee on the 4 yard line against the Tide as time expired), it was just the Tigers year, But Notre Dame definitely deserved a playoff spot and the 3rd place ranking. I think the Irish's Offense was a distant 4th best of the playoff teams last year. Just as clearly I think the Irish Defense was the 2nd best of the 4, with Bama being at 3rd & Oklahoma being 4th with a Defense equal to an average High school team.. I don't know how it would have turned out but it's interesting to think who would win those games and what the score would've been (Oklahoma vs. Notre Dame, Clemson vs. OKlahoma & Notre Dame vs. Alabama) I'm not gonna entertain a what if Georgia scenario because they lost 3 games (1 Choke & 2 blowouts) and didn't deserve to be in.

I'm just Happy the Clemson Tigers are National Champs again!!! 2018 was an awesome unforgettable season!

Go Tigers, Beat Georgia Tech & GOD Bless Clemson!!!!

There issue I have with it is he said He didn’t see that Clemson was better and believed in some areas ND was better. For one the only position/positions I would say ND was possibly better at skill wise was Secondary. The issue with that is football is the ultimate team sport. You can’t be good in one area and win against a team that’s clicking on all cylinders. Clemson could have easily dropped 50+ on both bama and ND if that was Dabo’s nature. Does that mean ND was not a great team last year? No it doesn’t. Does it mean that ND was as skilled and talented as Clemson was? No they weren’t. The game could’ve been played 20 times and I would have put my money on Clemson every time. As far as Oklahoma vs ND I believe it would have been a good game. Oklahoma clearly would have the advantage on Offense but I don’t think their Defense would be able to hold up

If anything, ND was more a challenge than Bama***

That’s fair about 4th vs 6th for ND. I think the committee got it right despite all the sec and big10 complaints. Of course everyone will say the 5th or 6th ranked team is better than the semi losers but it’s a circular argument. Everybody wants to compare schedules which is impossible.
Bottom line is Clemson won 3rd down on both sides of the ball, and turnovers in both games.
My glass half empty view is worried about the constant need to make 3rd and long. One of these days we won’t.

Do you think Clemson fans had anything to retort after our most recent loss to WV in the Orange Bowl? Never saw a single comment from any Clemson fan trying to shine a light on anything regarding that game other than they did us a favor in Dabo firing the DC and hiring Brent Venables.

In what possible areas were they better than us? Their offense was completely outclassed by our D. Our Qb was better than their QB. Our WR dominated their secondary, especially after Love went out. Their safeties were 5’8” and two steps slower than any wideout we sent their way. Maybe their D line held their own against our running game until ET busted out. But that’s about the only area where they were even close. That game could have gone another 60 minutes and I still think they score only 3-6 points.

Actually, ND's two starting safeties are 5'11" and 6'. As for your safeties, we'll never know, because your DL wouldn't let us throw anything in their area. :)

Where we were completely outclassed was in our OL vs. your DL. This I suspected would be the case before the game. Our OL lost its two best players to the NFL that year, and then lost its best remaining player to an ACL tear. Meanwhile, you had the best DL that has been seen in CFB for a long time, even without Dexter Lawrence.

A mismatch like that in the lines pretty much negates any other possible advantage an offense might have over a defense. Dexter Williams is a great RB, but he was never going anywhere on that day. Miles Boykin is a great WR, but you got to throw the ball to him. And Ian Book wasn't getting enough time to throw the ball. Even if he isn't as good as Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence wouldn't have looked good playing with our OL against your DL either!

As for "our WR dominated their secondary, especially after Love went out," what I saw was that your WR actually dominated Love's backup, Donte Vaughn. You all picked on him and he got smoked. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but you pretty much didn't throw to the other side of the field at Troy Pride, and our safeties held their own.

So, I don't quite agree that our DL was the only area where we were even close. It might be so, but most of our offense couldn't get going because your DL destroyed our OL. So really, we don't know one way or the other.

Our safeties were good, maybe better than yours. Hard to tell, though, since your DL wouldn't let us throw anything in their area. And Julian Love definitely held his own until he got knocked out of the game. But that's about it.

I would have liked to see us play Alabama. I think our defense was better than theirs last year, and their offense was certainly better than ours. You didn't outclass us any worse than you did Alabama -- which I was glad to see.

The defense was great, not as good as ours, but you guys had a stout defense. The bottom line is you guys were good. You deserved to be there over UGA but you were outclassed in every way by Clemson. The 42nd ranked offense is not going to win you a national championship this day in age. Just admit Clemson was better in all phases of the game and move on. A 27 point loss tells you that you need to get a LOT better if you want to win a national title.

It depends on how you define "phases." I don't think it's delusional to say that ND had "some" players who were better than their counterparts on the Clemson team. But as a whole, you were much the better team. As for your last sentence, you beat Alabama by 28. Does Alabama have to get a lot better if they want to win a national title? Or does the fact that they have won one recently and we haven't make it so for us but not for them?

is not referring to player. Areas means a personnel group or a specific area of responsibility for that personnel group. You seem like a good guy and I respect ND as a program but don’t come on here and try to defend what your AD said. Go back to the last time Clemson lost and see how Dabo responded. He doesn’t make excuses. He doesn’t say we did this or that better than them. He does what winners do. He gives credit where credit is due and goes back to work. Your AD and your head coach should take notes.

Seriously, Kelly had some things to work on personality-wise in 2015. He got stomped in 2016, and very much to his credit re-invented himself. "Kelly 2.0" has Notre Dame very much going in the right direction. If that turns out to be sustainable (we're going to find that out to a large extent this season) then we're going to be pretty darn good in 2020.

There's a lot of people heaping scorn on Swarbrick for his comment, and perhaps not seeing a "significant" talent differential is a bit over the top. If it weren't significant, we wouldn't have been beaten as badly as we were. Clemson proved beyond a doubt that it was the best team in CFB last year, and the overall depth of talent was superior to anyone's. However, I don't disagree with the rest of his statements.

In particular, I wouldn't dismiss out of hand the statement that "[ND] had units on the field that were the better of the two in some positions." Alohi Gilman was probably the best safety on the field, and Julian Love was as good as, and maybe better than, any of your CBs. You had much the better team overall, obviously. You had us beat at most of the positions, but all of them? Not likely.

Where you had us beat in every way was the quality of your depth. If we can lose one CB for a quarter and his replacement gets smoked that's a pretty good indicator of that.

I can't argue with the statement that we were as well prepared and conditioned as you were, either. Sure, Joey Batson is a living legend, but Matt Balis is one of the best in the business, too.

So no, I wouldn't characterize his comments as delusional (depending on the definition of "significant"). The context isn't "we could have won that came," but rather "there are lots of signs that we're moving in the right direction." We did our best and it wasn't good enough. That's all there is to it. But there were plenty of good signs for the future. ND is continuing to trend upwards, much like Clemson was not so many years ago. We haven't proven ourselves, and we're going to get dumped on more than we deserve to until we do. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? :)

I can't say that we're definitely going to be a regular top-four team over the next few years (who can?), but if we keep improving as we have the last couple of years, we should be. If we don't play you again this season (and I wouldn't bet that we will), we'll see you in 2020. Perhaps we'll give you a better game then. (Meanwhile, let's see how we do against Georgia this fall.)

In his defense, the ND game was closer than Bama.

Maybe he was referring to one of the N D bus drivers who just received a 20 years safe driving award.
Or maybe whoever thought those putrid green shoes were a good idea. No, upon further consideration it must have been the bus driver....

What he said isn't a complete lie but it is a stupid petty thing for an AD to say. I'm sure we could find some of their players to play.

In reality the biggest difference between the games was Bama didn't turn it over once against ND. Very uncharacteristically ETN coughed up a ball in the red zone. We were up big early and coasted to the end still putting up better numbers than Bama did. We gained more yards and held them to less. ND's offense had no answer.

One of the most amazing things to come out of this season is how many fans, particularly SEC and now ND, just can't accept the reality of Clemson being that much better. If Bama had done it there would be a world wide agreement they were the best ever but now that Clemson has literally accomplished the same level of success as Bama the last four years (actually one more conference championship and more h2h points) people just can't handle it. Per usual I feel this ignorance and hypocrisy is being pushed by the Baby Boomer generation that loves to ##### about Millennial snow flakes and their participation trophies but here we are hearing about how good a team that got blown out is.

To be fair I think ND gave us a better game than Bama. Bama moved the ball but had no idea what to do in the redzone. If not for one blown coverage by Muse before he could get used to Jeudy's speed we likely would have held them to single digits. Bama's defense was absolutely embarrassed across the board. Williams was the only thing that did anything all night. They actually even lucked out that they didn't get a targeting call early on that could have helped us get even more points. AND Dabo was extremely merciful but holding a TEN MINUTE drive just short of the goal line.

But at the end of the day I was so confident in a win that despite being one of the biggest Clemson fans I know I took the risk of watching the game from my deer stand in a spot with weak service. I got to see some deer and we won easily.

Has anyone ever seen Jack Swarbuck and Paul Finebaum together in the same room? They could be the same buffoon based on their recent comments.

Hey Jack, To be the man you've got to beat the man. This ain't the 1940's. Notre Dame is SO 20th century.

BTW, My Uncle graduated from there and one my cousins played for the Irish under Ara Parseghian.

If this guy truly, deeply believes this then, it’s no wonder Notre Dame always competes with UGA and Oklahoma for the pre-season National Championship. I am also struck by the arrogance of such a statement. It doesn’t serve his current position as AD well to not acknowledge where his program really is.

I'm disappointed with the undertone of this article and especially the tone of the comments by the posters. Remember the nice things ND said about Clemson after the game. Remember the two guys who received a ride to their hotel in the downpour and who gushed about the politeness and graciousness of Clemson. Well, if you can't be polite and gracious then at least be decent. Don't be so small minded as to be pulled into a meaningless debate about small things. It reflects poorly on you and the university. We are 15-0 National Championships who did it the right way. Please, be gracious in victory. We need to live up to a higher standard.

So this lurch ND a-hole in front of me just texted his friend that the game was “smart and rich against stupid and poor” classy

OTOH, so did this

We must have some reputation as bumpkins. At lunch today was a table if Bama fans. They all ordered and when their lunch came they said loudly “you Clemson fans may not know what this is but this is called steak and lobster” of course they were well on their way toward being too drunk to make it to the game. I wondered what the #### Tuscaloosa Alabama has over god’s country? I mean seriously, Alabama is not exactly a bastion of refinement in my experience and I spend a good bit of time in Alabama.

a 12-0 Notre Dame has begun losing the benefit of the doubt with the CFP Committee going forward considering their last two poor 12-0 post-season outing results. A 1-loss ND squad will be at a special disadvantage when it comes to selection time.
