Why is that? I would have thought it would be closer, like 7 or 10. What are they seeing?

The reason a point spread is set where it is and then moves up and down is to get an equal amount of money bet on both teams, that way Vegas wins no matter what.

If we were favored at home by 7-10 literally all the money would be on Clemson. The line moved to -19.5 and then dropped back to -17.5 bc more money was coming into the A&M side.

and it starts where they think it will get equal money bet both ways. They base that more on past fan betting experience than on "technical" football analysis. As others have said the objective is to get equal money bet on both teams not forecast who will win.

I agree but with such a large base, with many of them being professional gamblers, the spreads generally tend to be fairly accurate.
