Automotive Touch-up Paint... Lunge Advice Needed
Jun 19, 2020, 9:04 AM
|
|
|
Details What: a 5" deep scratch that looks like it was made by a knife blade
Where: Rear fender of my 2019 silver mustang gt
Why: Unknown. Maybe on purpose, maybe by accident.
When: Two days ago
How: Daughter said she did it with her bicycle brake lever, but paint and body guy called BS and said it was from a knife blade. Not sure why daughter would claim that she did it... at the end of the day it doesn't really matter.
A friend who is a paint and body guy said the whole panel needed be painted and blended, along with the other two shops in town... $700-$800. I am convinced that I could make it look decent with one of these diy scratch repair kits that you buy online with the primer pen, base coat pin, clear coat pin, etc. I don't expect it to be perfect, but enough where you'd have to look close to see it and not spend $700-800.
Anybody have any recommendations? I'm pretty dang handy, for what it's worth.

That's silver. Duct tape is silver. Problem solved.

If you want something a little more high end, slap some flex tape over it, spray paint the flex tape with a silver paint close to the car color (I'd go with silver sparkle) and then "blend" by making large gay swishy motions with your dainty wrists

You aren't gonna make it worse by trying to DIY. If it was my car I would just hit it with one of those paint pens from the auto parts store.

You must have missed that part in the post. He should have capitalized it so we could see it better.

like this on the cheap. I found a guy through an employee that is into BMWs and had a rim repaired/refinished on my wifes car for like $40. Dealer wanted $200 to fix or like $700 to replace.

Question:
Jun 19, 2020, 11:03 AM
|
|
Can you fit a whole can of spray paint up your butt?
If so, do it. If not, work your way up to it.
Considering it's a Mustank, try finding a NOS sticker that can go over it. That or something like "_insert local town nickname_ Boz Club" sticker. Not sure a Monster sticker could cover somthing that wide without turning it sideways. Then everyone would be confused as to why the 3 on your car is green and not white and outlined in and red with surrounding black.

Dass ghana look like chit with a dupli-color brush. Might keep it from rusting though, at least until the touch up paint comes off in a car wash.
Get the panel color matched and painted professionally.

It would probably need some filler, due to the depth

then primer, base, and clear.
Is there any chance that I throw $50 or so worth of supplies at it turns out "decent" in your opinion?
I'd almost like to give it a shot before taking it to the body shop. They should be able to fix any eff up that I may happen to make, right?

You could try it.

You're right, they'll just sand off anything you do.
The hardest part is going to be getting the finish and color the same. That's pretty hard to do with a rattle can. You might get it "good enough"; at least you realized it will need some filler.
Biggest problem is that the area needing paint will grow every time you try it because sanding, filling etc.

Wait a couple more for all the other damage to accumulate, then fix.

That's the point. Don't bother fixing it.

I'd be broke if attempting to fix every ding and dent my wife puts into her car.
I know the Mustang crowd likes to wash and wax their cars every weekend while shirtless in the front driveway. Seeing that scratch may be too much to handle.
