When the tournament began it was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Clifford Roberts suggested it be called the Masters, a reference to the "masters of golf" who played in it, but Bobby Jones thought the name immodest. Roberts finally got his way in 1939.

It will stay "The Masters". One thing that Augusta Nat'l has proven is they don't
back down to PC pressure. Just look back a few years when they were
being accosted about not having women in their tournament. They laughed
and held it the way they wanted to anyway.
