Teacher heroes

Aug 13, 2020, 7:43 AM

NYT daily podcast this morning is all a bunch of teachers whining about being forced to go back to school and teachers union suing Florida. Here’s an idea- why don’t we just get a handful of construction workers to line up outside the school and applaud them as they walk in? That seemed satisfactory for healthcare workers.

Open schools up. Do the best you can to prevent getting sick. Healthcare, service industries are figuring it out. Do we think education is any less essential?

I'm sure someone expressing concerns about their and their families safety isn't whining. I get it; right wingers have this irrational hatred of public education because of all the "it's indoctrinates kids to socialism lies!". We'll just dismiss your comments as that.

Education is essential, but the problem is that there hasn't been a reopening model like this: Jamming thousands into crowded areas and classrooms. Did you see the Georgia high school disaster? They've already had to shut back down.

Too many schools in America are dilapidated and overcrowded, and there are questions about how the virus could spread their HVAC systems (I'm no expert on how that #### works; just know that's a concern). The Trump/Republican move to force schools back open is a political one and not one based in intelligence or good planning.

It'll only take sick kid or teacher, and the whole thing will shut down again, just like Georgia.

They should have kids go in different shifts and make the classes smaller. Maybe each shift only goes 3 days per week. Just teach the very basics. No art or pe etc.

Yes!

Aug 13, 2020, 8:18 AM

Let the PE, ART, MUSIC teachers go around sanitizing things, checking temperatures, or filling in as substitutes, since you know the demand for substitutes will be way higher.

or in the instance of our resident PE teacher... have him scrubbing toilets and let the janitor substitute teach.

Aug 13, 2020, 8:16 AM

tuesdays.

Not all of them, but in my experience, most of them.

They're always complaining about how hard their job is, how low the pay is, and doing what they can to get out of doing actual work.

The whole world has been back to work for months... most of us never stopped working. They aren't heros, martyrs, etc.

Most of the ones that I know are too stupid and/or lazy to be fit for any other job. These bullshiit masters degrees that they all get help their pay significantly, to the point where their equivalent hourly rate isn't too bad... especially since they're dumb and lazy.

Somehow they're above reproach.

He's got a point. You never hear anything positive from teachers about being teachers. Low pay, long hours, insufficient funding, bad kids, indifferent parents....it goes on and on. It is as if they had no idea what the job entailed or paid before the took it. I honestly don't think I've ever heard a teacher say or post (Facebook) anything good about the job. You'd think eventually you'd encounter someone who thought, "despite all the frustrations, it's a rewarding job." You don't hear that. Ever.

I'm not suggesting the issues that plague teachers aren't legit. I am saying it isn't like those issues aren't well known. Teachers seek out a job that requires long hours and low pay then seemed frustrated by those very things. As for kids and parents, there is little to be done about that. Society is moving more and more to a place where there is a lack of accountability and personal responsibility. Far more than hours and money, I'd think this is the factor more likely to lead teachers to leave the profession.

You made a conscious decision to choose what you do for a living, so quit bitching about the choices other people made for themselves. At the end of the day, it's an honest day's work and it's trying to support themselves and their family.

You work an honest job to take care of you and yours. Teachers do the same. You probably do something important for society. Teachers do something important for society.

Wife has 4 friends that are teachers. I have known these girls since elementary school.

2 are fat cows that made in the 800's on their SATs and had to go to private colleges to get a degree. Both have multiple masters (eye roll) and couldn't possibly do another job besides maybe some sort of temporary office secretary type BS. They whine whine whine about how hard their jobs are and how crappy the pay is. Give me a break.

1 is pretty hot, but complains complains complains. It never stops. Begging for supply donations, expecting "teacher gifts" Wanting moms to volunteer to help her do her job constantly. Meanwhile she spends the whole summer at the beach and hasn't hit a lick since March.

1 is very hot and pretty smart. She's the only 1 that could probably have been a lot of different things, accountant, nurse, whatever. She's pretty straight up about her job being easy. Her husband has a really good job so she gets by just fine.

So that's my actual experience, which shapes my opinion... not Rush Limbaugh.

the best you can do is what you HAVE to do, as best as you can do it. Kids HAVE to go to school. Teachers HAVE to teach. Bread HAS to be baked. Gas HAS to be pumped. Oil HAS to be drilled.

Just do it as best as possible. Most of the truly essential things that are truly essential are not that dangerous and relatively low risk (IF you wear a mask and wash your hands). Concerts, conventions, bars, restaurants, parties, some of the most "dangerous" activities are often NOT essential.

Re: Good Lord man, you're like a broken record.

Aug 13, 2020, 3:16 PM

Yep. I'll keep saying it until it's driven home. I'll go a step further: You put down a person for the job they do, if an honest profession, then you weren't raised properly. Mommy and/or Daddy failed somewhere along the way.

When I was a young un, I once made fun of a janitor in front of my father. That was the last #### time I ever made that stupid mistake.

Yeah, you are ignorant. Want evidence? Let's look at this stupid post:

https://www.tigernet.com/forum/message/Exactly-27624059

First, you somehow think how the four people look has any ####### thing to do with this discussion or their abilities in their profession, which is ignorant as ####. Second, you take four people--a whopping four--and present this anecdotal evidence as a condemnation of an entire profession.

That's not just ignorance; that's a failure to even grasp an iota of logic. Maybe you would be better to take your opinions from Rush because if you can judge millions of people in a profession based on just the four you know who do it, that's walking ignorance.

Then, from your previous post:

"Most of the ones that I know are too stupid and/or lazy to be fit for any other job. These bullshiit masters degrees that they all get help their pay significantly, to the point where their equivalent hourly rate isn't too bad... especially since they're dumb and lazy."

But you claim you are "just... sick of hearing teachers gripe about their jobs." Really? You just called them dumb, lazy, and not fit for another job.

Because why? You know four of em. Who maybe suck at their job. But hey, one of em is hot. So I guess you know.

If I'm coming across as being holier-than-thou, sanctimonious, and right-out arrogant in this reply, trust me, it's ####### intentional.

Not all teachers are putting themselves on the same level as healthcare workers, but in my experience, some are.

My wife is a nurse and she about blew a gasket when one of her teacher friends posted a link to free living wills and suggested that all teachers fill one out since they are being sent to a certain death. It was so dramatic and a real slap to the face to healthcare workers and others who have been out working while they had a 5-6 month paid vacation.

Like I've said in other posts, my wife made a decision to keep working. She could have stayed home and we could make it on just my income, but she decided that the risk was worth it. Best believe that the hospital wouldn't have paid her to sit at home if she felt scared...

My opinion

Aug 13, 2020, 1:19 PM

Any teacher, young, old, gay, straight, black, white, diabetic, alcoholic, etc. can choose to not return to the classroom. But I sure as heck wouldn't pay them. I'd let them apply to be an online teaching consultant, or whatever they call the teachers who run the online academies. If they don't want to do that, then the world always needs more sexworkers and garbage men. Paying people to not work is bull crap.

If you're a teacher and you are actually worried about your safety, then maybe it's worth it to quit your job. If you're a teacher and you're just complaining and being a blowhard, then maybe you should just shut up and do your job.

If I felt that my job was putting my life in jeopardy, I'd have to make that decision for myself. We have had fatalities at our plant during my time here. I've never felt that my life was on-the-line, but if it was, I'd have to decide if the juice was worth the squeeze.

It sounds like in my district that proper precautions are being taken and they're at least going to give it a shot. I guess we'll wait and see how successful it is. Fangers crossed.

Aug 13, 2020, 1:39 PM

People have to learn new trades, skills and even go into new professions. Liberals think nothing of putting a fracking worker, a gun maker or a oil field worker out of work. They are tying to make that permanent.

Imo, if the schools weren't failing this would be an entire different situation. We need to scrap the federal involvement in education and bust up all the teachers' unions. Then perhaps local authorities might be able to make American education great again.

I don't know what the answer is.

I see similarities between teachers and police. They're both a huge part of our population, both do critical jobs, both jobs pay poorly, I have no interest in doing either of them, both have union involvement. The unions SHOULD be helping the teachers and police have better working conditions, but in reality, they protect the crappy ones and allow the crappy ones give the good ones a bad name.

This in turn causes scum like Dawghater and I to denigrate them. /s

Federally I think they fall short of running the system, but I have less faith in my particular local politicians.
