Connor Shaw vs Braxton Miller

Dec 10, 2013, 1:31 PM

How do these two QB's compare. I assume miller is the better passer but is he a better runner also? I know walt said shaw was one of fastest qbs in the country just wondered how miller compared.

Miller is faster & a shiftier runner than Connor. Connor is a smart QB who has some speed to the edge. Miller can take it to the house on just about any play.

Miller's less accurate, doesn't read through progressions...

Dec 10, 2013, 2:00 PM [ in reply to Re: Connor Shaw vs Braxton Miller ]

not as good of a decision maker, doesn't have as good a feel for pocket when passing, looks to run first, not as much of gamer, and not as lucky as shaw.

Miller may be faster, but if our goal is to stop the run (which they love to do) and make him beat us through the air, then don't expect him to take any 50+ yd runs to the house.

His lack of accuracy, and our blowing up the backfield with various run blitz packages, will force him to poor decisions and bad throws which our secondary can capitalize on, without having to be in perfect coverage all night long, in fear of being picked apart through the air.

Re: Connor Shaw vs Braxton Miller

Miller is bigger and more athletic than Shaw. Stronger arm, better overall passer. Miller I understand is faster, but perhaps not as quick.

Shaw is bigger. Miller is more athletic. Shaw is the better overall passer. Miller is faster. Shaw most likely has the stronger arm. Miller is quicker than Shaw.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 1:52 PM

Shaw is not bigger...about the same size, but Miller is slightly bigger.

Miller has a higher completion percentage, QB rating (despite throwing 4 more interceptions) and actually puts air under the ball on the long throws. Shaws inaccuracy on long throws is that he doesn't/can't get enough air under them.

Being the quicker is a personal observation...whether is quickness or decision making...Shaw to me looks quicker....just not as fast in the open field.

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 1:57 PM

If you have watched OSU play then it's obvious why his completion percentage is higher despite him being a worse passer. He hit short routes and only throws deep when somebody is wide open. If there is no open receiver then he runs quickly.
Miller is the quicker "make you miss" type runner. Shaw heads for the corner or straight up field. There is not much quickness to him.
I don't care what Miller is listed at on their roster, he looks tiny on the field. He is very skinny.

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 2:06 PM

Could be right on his accuracy. I contributed the pass selection to the type of offense that Meyer runs, moreso than Miller's inability to hit the intermediate passes. Remember Tebow doing the same thing at UF.

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 2:11 PM

Remember Tebow trying to throw other routes in the NFL?

Did you watch Miller against MSU this past Saturday? He struggled greatly when trying to hit downfield passes on third and long. Sometimes he had receivers but failed to hit the open man. Sailed a lot of balls. I am hoping he does the same thing against Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 2:18 PM

Agree on Tebow...but NFL is a whole different game. A lot of good QBs in college won't make it there.

Saw the game....MSU had OSU receiver under lock and key, but you are right...Miller air mailed several passes especially with the pressure MSU's DL put on him. If Clemson can get that kind of pressure and keep him in the pocket, Miller will be toast (not a great decision maker...especially when he feels pressure) and Clemson will be able to shut him down.

Michigan State has the top rated Defense in the Country. A better example of what Miller may look like against Clemson would be to watch the Michigan game.

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 3:20 PM

Defense has little effect on a QB with his feet planted hitting an open WR. Now maybe he was already shaken up but his pure ability to throw the ball was not there Saturday night.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You are incorrect on most

Dec 10, 2013, 3:47 PM

He was getting pressured, DB's did a fantastic job of coverage on the WR's, especially in the 4th quarter. Fact is that Clemson better be ready to stop the run against a stout running back & a very mobile quarterback.

OSU's plan will be to run first & throw second.

TO is correct on most of his points. Miller is like a home run hitter in baseball, he has the ability to "go long" on any given play. Connor's plus was his "football smarts" as a coaches son he took what the other team gave him.

I believe that if you contain him in the pocket, he is not going to beat you.

Where are you getting your numbers for Miller from? Aside from his height and weight, none of the numbers you cite are correct.

Braxton Miller's 2013 numbers are:
YDS 1860
Comp % 63.2
YDs/Att 8.1
TDs 22
INTs 5
QBR 157.9
Rushing Yds 1033
Rushing YPC 6.8

Wrong Shaw is 6'1 209, Miller is 6'2 215.

Different type of player used completely differently

Dec 10, 2013, 2:01 PM

both can run and throw obviously. But Shaw is a scrambler and extends plays with his legs. Miller is a runner. Ohio State is more like an option team in that they will have more called runs for Miller (and that big back Hyde) but Miller doesn't scramble and get huge runs with the LBs running in coverage.

Miller in Ohio States offense is more comparable to Boyd than Shaw in the way they use him. Miller is much faster and much more of a threat for big yardage than Boyd.

True. think they have one good DB (Roby) the rest of their secondary is bad. Good, maybe elite DL, average to above average LBs, but terrible secondary.

I have family in Ohio....

Dec 10, 2013, 2:50 PM

all of whom are Ohio State fans and many are Ohio State alums so I do follow Ohio State.

They have a few very good DB's in Bradley Roby, Christian Bryant and CJ Barnett but they tend to take terrible angles to the ball which results in their getting beat a good bit.

They also struggle with HUNH offenses. Everett Withers, the OSU DB coach, prefers to play a soft zone rather than press man in order to keep the legs of his DB fresher against those types of team who run 80+ plays per game.

Ohio State used Miller much like Clemson uses Boyd with designed run playes compared to Shaw who tends to scramble more in order to extend plays.

Miller is just a better version of Shaw. Better thrower and runner. I'd say OSU also runs a better system than SC. It's gonna be a tough test no doubt. I said it the other day, there will be ZERO room for error.
