UNC apologizes to Clemson for controversial video board jokes

Why are so many of us offended when we think the Tigers are not playing up to our expectations? Why are so many of us offended when someone criticizes our posts? Appears to me all of us are offended in different ways. I suppose that's what makes the world go round and we all turn out to be snowflakes.

Sensitivity and taking things personal are and have been a problem in society for quite some time and is getting worse.
I'm guilty and try and reign myself in. I suppose insecurity is an issue with most folks.

You don't have to be offended to think it was in bad taste. If it was a sign at Game day, in the student section or even from the cheerleaders it is easier to mark it up to good natured ribbing. When it is on the jumbotron, it gives the appearance of something sanctioned by the university. That being said, I think the statement and apology shows that it was something that slipped through, and is sufficient at least to me.

Funny!

It really wasn't remotely funny though.

GO TIGERS

I was there too. Some of our fans booed.

[4]
Posted: Sep 30, 2019 6:16 PM

One by one the camera focused on some random, unsuspecting Clemson fan in attendance. After the first few of those punchline captions came up, it seemed like they were trying to make them progressively more "edgy". I was in the main Clemson section, & after the 4th or 5th one i started to hear a lot of boos around me.
Granted that sometimes we seem to be living in an age of hypersensitivity. But this did strike me as being in somewhat poor taste. Not something that i could ever imagine us doing to visiting teams' fans @ DV.
But personally, I & my family/friends had a great time in Chapel Hill. All of the UNC fans that we encountered before, during & after the game were most of gracious & welcoming. In fact many of them seemed happy for our success & what it has meant for our conference. And all of them wished us luck against the Uof5C & said they wouldn't mind if we hung half a hundred on 'em.
Just say apology accepted & move on.

And the captions were added after the fact. So the people in the video could not even give the camera the double bird because it wasn't real time like they do at baseball games.

I agree it was classless but what do you expect. I was at a bar called Goodfellas before the game and they had a picture of Coach K in the urninals.

You will, from time to time, see some good natured jokes. Sometimes, you may be the butt of that joke. It's life. Get over it. I thought they were mildly humorous, and not offensive. They could've been much worse... involving trailer parks, intercourse with sheep and maybe some cousins. That would've raised a few eyebrows. But this stuff they did... just harmless fun. This was kind of funny and if it would be hilarious if you were a Heel fan. I wish we would have done something like this during the Coot game.

Like- "This Coot thinks we are cycling out!"

Picture with Coot on phone, caption saying "Bet he is calling Spurriers agent!

Etc, could have fun with that but the snowflakes today are so sensitive they can't take a joke. I have a sister that is 18yrs younger than me and she can not take a joke if it's on her! But I grew up with a dad that was still in military and I had better had thick skin when I was her age.

Thanks to your Dad for his service

Thats obviously the way with kids today. Get their panties in a bunch if they cant have their way and if someone says the least little negative thing. I'm actually saddened that our fan base cant take a joke. BTW, all you cornpuffers out there that got offended AND made a big deal about it...get ready, every away game is now going to make a big deal about it. It may not be on the jumbotron... But every college kid out there is gonna be making a sign thats going to have something "O-ffensive" . now your cornpuffer panties are really gonna be getting pinched

Ah, the “kids today suck compared to my day” post. Ever think you hear about more people being offended these days because of social media? 10-15 years ago none of us would know about anyone being upset, and most people who weren’t at the game would even know anything happened to begin with.

People aren’t more easily upset these days, they just have a million platforms to voice their displeasure.

This is true

Posted: Sep 30, 2019 7:11 PM

nowadays you can blast your thoughts of displeasure to the world on a social media platform at any time. While back in the day what did you do? Write them down by candlelight? Tell like one friend?

Re: Snowflakes

Posted: Sep 30, 2019 7:54 PM

True to all the above but people were not as easily offended either! Social media has definitely opened the door for those that are. But one of the problems is people that think someone may be offended that create issues just to get the pot stirred for their own enjoyment. People throw crap out there and hope it sticks or gains traction. And that sensitivity is only embellished because senstive's have become so reactive to the few and not the masses!

Re: Snowflakes

Posted: Sep 30, 2019 9:14 PM

Ahhhhh... No. People today are more offended at ridiculous crap. Just because you were born into the social media era doesnt mean that there wasnt news....newspapers and tv actually went out and reported things. Most people, at that point, would have laughed this off as "kids being kids". I am around all sorts of people. I hire all sorts of people. Attitudes and emotions are much different today. Social media has been the outlet for people getting their panties in a bunch so that they believe they can be relevant

Are you people serious!? I’m a huge Clemson fan and I really don’t care for Carolina, but that was just fun! And the person who demanded or required an apology should be ashamed as well as the rest of you that were, for some reason, offended! It was witty and not the least bit offensive. Even the joke about the “fridge” was clever and I’m sure had nothing to do with the size of the person on the screen, just a coincidence! Nobody should have to feel bad or required to issue an apology. It was just harmless fun! Relax!!!

Good god whoever is offended by this is so soft. How can someone like that even enjoy football?

I'm sure we've had our fair share of bandwagon fans who have jumped on in the last few years, but I doubt they are the ones paying to travel to away games.

The humor is in the irony that UNC basketball has possibly the largest bandwagon contingent of any hoops team on the planet.

We should send this apology back as it is not necessary in any way.

If they want to make things right, they should give us some foul shots from that hack at the end of the last basketball match up.

they definitely would not make it in a locker room or on the field when I played we said a whole lot worse and then just shuck hands after the game and laughed with each other. it is all in the game.

what made me mad was the apparent ribbing that

If it's rude to walk up to someone and tell them something to their face, then you have no business putting it on a Jumbotron. Would you walk uo to stranger and tell them they were as fat as the fridge? I didn't think so.

It's pervading society, people are getting accustomed to insulting and attacking each other from the safety of an anonymous keyboard. What has happened to common civility?

Was anybody physically hurt? No. Well then move along. Nothing to see here. Bullying. What a bunch of garbage. I guess the people who were on the screen ran home to mommy. They do this stunt at the Braves game. Put the camera on unsuspecting fans. The last one is always a fan wearing opposing gear with some crack. Relax. This is what is wrong with society today. Nobody's life was changed because some hyperactive pimple-faced grad student in the UNC athletic promotions department decided to go off the rails. And IMO, we actually embarrassed ourselves by complaining about it. That shows that it "bothered" us. It was a joke people. A joke.

And I dislike the Tar Holes more than I hate South Carolina or Georgia. I will never ever ever ever ever forgive them for the extra year of probation in the mid-80s. Never. And it always irritates me when there are more Tar Holes at LJ than there are Clemson fans.

You’re right in most counts

But it was so far out of context that it seemed to be an attack by unc toward clemson and thus if it made a public apology by unc forthcoming then all the better. It’s one of the few times that unc would lower itself to apologize to Clemson over anything and they owe clemson an apology for what they did in 1982 and what they did to everyone for the academic scandal.

My wife and I were shown great hospitality by the UNC fans around us. Similar experience at Virginia Tech a few years ago. The jokes as subtitles explaining the thoughts of a fan were just a little dig and we all had a good laugh at ourselves. I would not call them controversial but I could see were some may find it slightly insulting especially those individuals that were depicted.

I'm late to the board tonight due to work, so this will likely go without notice, however, let me say this. Picking fans or people and saying witty comments is one thing, but when it becomes slanderous or personal it is another. For all those who think that everyone in society has sensitive feelings and blah, blah, let me say this. If you go to a comedy show and sit on the front row, you asked for whatever you get from the comic and should be prepared to deal with it. If you go to a football game and they jumbo-tron you, different story. In regards to the bigger fellow with the "fridge" joke, I get both the reference to the player and the food reference. Here is what I would say to anyone who thinks that is OK. I'm 6'5" and 280lbs and would say that if you feel good enough to walk up to me and make a comment like that to my face, then all good, and if you don't, then you probably should not say it. In other words, its easy to tap on that key board for an insulting laugh at someone else, but if you are not man or women enough to do it to their face.........keep it locked up in your mind as you are probably a coward and dealing with your own issues. My two cents for ya.
