Took my wife to a concert / dance there after one of the football games. It was the hottest building I have ever been in . They [played in LJ by the time I got to school so I only played intrarmurals there and never saw a varsity game there

I've been in there countless times...

It never seemed that dark to me.

Maybe the quality of the lighting has improved over the decades.

artifical surface Bball courts for Intramural leagues just before I got there in 1972. The "new" courts were off white, and the place was nice and bright. :)

This was before my time but I’m surprised the White reflection off all them legs didn’t brighten it up.

Great atmosphere. We would always sit right behind the opposing team and make enough noise during the time outs so the players could not hear what the coach was telling them

Fike Field House was some of the best memories growing up

May 8, 2020, 11:36 AM

in Clemson! I saw all the Mahaffey brothers play in the "Cow Palace". There weren't but three gyms in Clemson. One in the YMCA, that you couldn't hardly do a layup without running into a brick wall under the basket. The other two were at Fike, the "little gym" and the "big gym". Without a doubt when we played basketball games in the "big gym" as 5th graders, we were kings of the courts! I can remember Walt Ayres trying to show me how to do a hook shot in the paint. During the summers, we'd sneak in the "big gym" through the windows and shoot hoops for hours until someone ran us out and threatened to tell our parents. Then we'd be back the next week doing the same thing.

Ah ... yes ... Fike Field House ... was there then - in the 60’s... Many a delightful game .. -<img border=">">">">">

Loved the bb games @ Fike. So close to the court you could talk to the players. Attended several
celebrity concerts/dances there in the 60's with my future wife.

My future roommate and I went to the Carolina-Clemson basketball game in 1961 as a guest of the Athletic Department when I was being recruited. They allowed fans to smoke in the gym then, and the smoke that night was thick and dense while extending like a cloud from the ceiling to about head level. The place was packed, and the entrance aisles at each corner were also filled at least ten deep with standing room only. It was also hot but deafening loud with so many people in there. Having not ever being around smokers, I was not very happy to be there; and it almost turned me off to coming to Clemson. However, I did matriculate in the fall that year and stayed for BS, MS, and PhD degrees while there. I eventually came to love the place and would like to live in Clemson before I pass away. Great years in those hills!

Can anyone identify the players in this pic

May 8, 2020, 2:43 PM

Not sure if the one on the left is Randy Mahaffey
From the mid-60’s - I didn’t miss a game the last 3 years it was used

Donnie Mahaffey is on the left. Gary Burnisky is #12.

I went to Fike several times growing up and it was a cracker box but sadly the talent we had was not good enough to make it a great home court advantage. Wait a minute in the last 20 years that describes Littlejohn too.

Remember those times well. Went to wrestling matches there. One time when we had U of GA there, the heavey weight match involved a Georgie guy that, I think was undefeated, against a big tackle for us named Gillespie
The Dog was really working our guy over and got him with a real stinger to the chin. Gillespie had a look of desperation on his face and began flailing away like a whirlwind and luckily landed a strong right to his chin and knocked him out. The place went wild.

Another memorable event in either 1948 or 1949 was a visit by Billy Graham. He was just getting to be known. The next morning in the Psychology class Professor "Psycho" Waite asked how many had gone to hear Graham. Quite a few hands went up. Prof then said, " You have probably just witnessed your first example of mass hypnosis. That tells you a lot about the irreverence of Prof "Psycho".

I saw every single minute of every game played in Fike while I was a student. Nothing like it. Played many intramural games there also. I played in a pickup game once with some of the football players .... and survived. Perhaps you have noticed the lack of orange in the stands. It was years before wearing the school colors to games became popular.

Littlejohn was a huge upgrade! William Perry broke one of those backboards dunking a basketball when he was a Freshman. Banks McFadden was the Intramural Athletic Director with an office in Fike, a great man and an approachable legend for any student.

Maybe the strangest concert bill I ever saw was in Fike. Spring 1968. Strawberry Alarm Clock, Buffalo Springfield (with a couple of unknowns named Stephen Stills and Neil Young,) and the Beach Boys. Eclectic, to say the least, and yes, it was hot! Great show. Mike Love sang "Goober Peas" sitting on the edge of the stage. I saw the BBs many times back in the day, but that was the only one when they did "Goober Peas." I was dating the future and still current Dogmom. 52 year ago. Lord, we has got old.
