So Hootie was not Howard’s first choice. Would Peterson

have been any better?

Instead of accepting Howards offer, he went to Rice for one losing season, then was abysmal as a coach in the NFL for a couple of seasons.

So, probably not.

Clemson just wasn’t a particularly attractive job back then.

I remember that 1969 game against Alabama because my friend's dad was a Highway Patrolman and he was assigned the duty of escorting the Alabama team buses and it fun speeding through Clemson in the patrol car. The other thing about those years is we played Alabama, Auburn and Georgia all in 1969. Why can't that happen today?

growing up in the '50s and '60s listening to his voice on the "Verner Tate Show" watching him and listening to him talk.

He spoke in a thick Alabama accent.

Buddy Gore he would pronounce it as " Buddie Go carries the ball fuo(4) yhards.

or the punter (I think) whose last name was Wertz pronounced by Howard "Wuetz". Of course there were a lot of other funny pronunciations that will come to me after I post this.

Coach Howard did not say that the Alumni were sick of him; it was that IPTAY was sick of him.

But, curiously, he remained AD & got to select his successor

Having Frank Howard as AD was horrible for the basketball program at a critical stage.

Hootie hire was right up there with Hatfield and West. Just complete disasters. Tried to cheap out.

The Clemson job wasn’t attractive in 1970.

Tried first to get Bill Peterson from FSU, but he took the Rice job instead.

I remember reading about coach Howard stepping down, I had only been walking about a year so I was just beginning to realize the state of Clemson Football. I knew I was a big fan but I was just beginning to develop an in-depth love ?? for the program.

I was hoping we would get a better coach but it’s hard to figure out who’s good at 2 years old. I remember telling mama “dat-boy” but I couldn’t find him.

Thanks for sharing those great memories from my youth.
