TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Clemson’s offensive numbers weren’t great against LSU Monday night in the National Championship, and offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said that he thinks the entire offense started to press in trying to help the Clemson defense. Full Story »

He's not the only coordinator to get itchy and give up on the run in a game like that. Its easy to get sucked into the "they scored, now we have to score again quick".

Committing to the run is hard to do because it usually requires being patient in high pressure situations.

So, our coaches were not patient in high pressure situations in this game. Can't understand how they can stub their toes like this, given all the experience they have. And who says we have to score right away? Long, time consuming drives would have been a better course of action rather than giving the ball back to LSU after two or three minutes.

Jan 16, 2020, 9:45 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU ]

But coordinators are grown men who get paid lots of money to develop a plan and stick with it (or adapt it) when the pressure gets ramped up. Nobody is perfect, but professionals deserved to get called out when they don't perform up to standards.

That Elliott article was full of weak and cliched excuses. They had a chance to adjust at halftime and they didn't - or they didn't stick to the plan.

If there was something else going on that dictated the plans, let them say. But the excuses that have been given aren't cutting it.

Actually, I give him a ton of credit for owning up to it and admitting it. He could have easily said, "we wanted to, but the way the game was going, we just couldn't." Looking back, I'm sure he'd much rather lose giving touches to ETN than abandoning his "plan" b/c he felt the need to "keep up". Not sure we could stop Burrow unless we forced a turnover late or something to get him rattled again. Once he was feeling it, well he put the ball on the money each throw.

What? Other than their 3 second quarter scoring drives

Jan 16, 2020, 5:15 PM

the defense did more than enough to keep us in striking range. They gave us the ball back down three and kept us within 10 longer than they had any right given the offense couldn't stay on the field.

I know it's easy to look at 42 points and blame the defense but this loss is actually squarely on the offense.

He owned up to it, and like he said it is easy to have 20/20 in hindsight. If Trevor would have settled in, everybody would have been calling him a genius for sticking with Trevor. Sometimes there are mistakes, and we lose, even here at Clemson.

Still a disappoint Elliot. The kid is in his hometown, he's averaging 5+ yards a carry , not rocket science. By the 3 rd quarter when we cut the score to 25-28 would have a good time to come back with the run instead of throwing the ball on first down. I don't blame ETN if he wants to take his talents to the NFL after that poor game calling. Still makes me sick that he only had 15 carries!!!

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Jan 16, 2020, 8:55 AM

Similar to how Alabama lost to Clemson 44-16. If anyone remembers, Bama ran the ball very, very well against Clemson in that game, but Bama didn't stick with the run, they allowed Tua to throw it and two picks he did. Combine that with Clemson's outstanding offensive performance and that's how a 4 TD separation happens. We didn't control the clock with the run and panicked. Monday night's game had to be one of the longest games ever - sure felt like it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He sounds like Tommy Bowden. Too much like him.

Jan 16, 2020, 8:55 AM

I cringe when I hear coaches talk about letting playmakers make plays. Bowden said that over and over and over. Only problem is he fed playmakers over and over and teams stopped the playmakers and we lost. We won a natty with a TD pass to a walk-on WR. We spread the ball around to everyone, got everyone involved. We didn't feed the playmakers, we played as a team. Playmakers are just as effective as decoys as they are making plays.

I always heard Elliott called the plays, but I never really understood Jeff Scott's role. I have this sinking feeling Jeff Scott's loss is going to be felt.

Hope I'm wrong.

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Jan 16, 2020, 9:05 AM

I remember when we had all that early field position and we couldnt score. Not even field goals. That ended up sinking us. Travis had some nice runs but the blocking was inconsistent. He'd get 8 or 9 then lose 2 or 4. In a game like that you need to establish some things and we never got much that we really established and could rely on. When the rb coach has probably the best back he's ever had you shouldnt shelve him for a quarter if you're trailing.

Trevor was struggling so Elliot keeps calling up verticals and 50/50 balls? Did not make sense.
Hopefully now Elliot being the man he will use the offseason to perfect his craft. Including in game adjustments not after the fact.3rd and 5 should have been quick, short passes I would think.

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Jan 16, 2020, 9:21 AM

While I appreciate Tony's introspective comments, they don't necessarily give me a confident feeling going forward. If he "knew" he needed to get ETN plenty of touches, why didn't he? ETN had only one carry in the final 26 minutes of the game, according to Tony. How does he reconcile this with what he "knew" he had to do.

I posted before the game that I would like to see a few new wrinkles on offense because Ohio State seemed to be sitting on the routes being run by Tee and Justyn, and there were no decent running lanes for Travis. I felt that the play calling was getting stale and predictable. I got blasted for that, with suggestions that maybe I'd like to have Billy Napier back... and didn't I realize that we were averaging over 43 ppg. My only point in making that post was to say that a wrinkle or two might take some pressure off the defense. Those responding are certainly entitled to their opinions, but some of the comments were just whacky. Nevertheless...

The two "new" plays we ran in the Fiesta Bowl were a big part of why we won the game... OSU was not "sitting" on either one of them. We ran a couple of "new" plays in the Natty that worked as well. The reverse to Tee went for a TD, and two passes to Braden Galloway went for a total of 60 yards. I know that plays like the reverse probably aren't going to work more than once in a game, but maybe a few more targets for Galloway could have changed things up. At the very least, LSU would have had to stop doubling both sidelines and cover the middle of the field.

It's easy for us Monday morning quarterbacks to sit back and pick up on things, while the coaching staff is right in the middle of the action and don't have the luxury of "taking a few minutes off" to make in-game adjustments. And it's especially easy for us to look at everything in hindsight, which is always 20-20. The main takeaway from Tony's comments is that he sees some things that could have (and should have) been done differently. He's a smart guy, and his record speaks for itself. I will look forward to seeing the results of his thought processes in September.

As always, nothing I say is intended to criticize. I'm not a coach, nor do I want to be one. I can only offer observations on what I see.

Oh, one more thing. I'm not sure that anything could have changed the fact that on Monday night LSU was the better team, and that it was their destiny to win the ballgame (whether or not voodoo was involved). But as I commented to one drunk LSU fan who, for some unknown reason while I was walking back to the hotel after the game, decided to jump in front of me and give me a ration of poop, "Congratulations on your win. Enjoy it. We'll be back in the playoffs next year. Will you?"

Go Tigers! The new streak starts in September!

The LSU coaches did what they were supposed to do, nothing more, nothing less. The Clemson coaches did much less than they were supposed to. Too bad. All those weapons not being used. Isn't the point of Dabo using everyone during the season having them ready for the big games at the end? Then why only rely on passes to Tee and Justyn?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Jan 16, 2020, 11:21 AM

why only passes to Ross and Tee? Maybe because that's who Trevor was looking for. Plus Trevor was throwing off his back foot instead of stepping into his throws and that caused the ball to sail high. Think Trevor may have gotten in his head that the pass rush was better that it actually was. I don't know. Just an observation.
As far as play calling, it is not just on Elliott, where was Dabo?

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Jan 16, 2020, 9:43 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU ]

It was an unfortunate loss. It seems reasonable that the coaches were fearing to put the ball back into the hands of LSU offense as they were really starting to take over our defense. Clemson looked like they were becoming desperate to stay on the field instead of running and being methodical. Maybe our defense was becoming worn out. It certainly looked like the defensive guys were more exhausted than in most previous games. They played their hearts out but after so many stops Burrow got this big yardage plays and that had to be degrading mentally. So Clemson offense felt they were desperate and continued to put the game in TL’s shoulders. That’s a tall order on a night you are not playing your best. It happens and did.

Thanks to the Tigers for a great season.

It was clear LSU's speed made running wide problematic as well as the bubble screens. Inside zones worked well and up the middle traps. Would have liked to have seen about 35 carries by Travis to keep LSU's offense off the field and open up the passing lanes for Trevor. Like you said: Hind sight is 20/20! Go Tigers!

Really disappointed in ETN entering witness protection in the early 3rd Q. Our play calling is usually spot on with good in game adjustments. His lack of touches were an issue mid season. I remember Elliott saying mid year that he needs to be more intentional about getting ETN straight run touches (vs rpo). He is just too good. Seemed like a no brainer to go that route when we were down 3. A few more designed QB runs would have been good too. Oh well, great season and ready for the next one.

Oh well ... it doesn’t happen often but Swinney, Elliott and Offensive coaching staff was completely overmatched vs LSU DC.

I’m sure there is an example, but it’s hard to find one where Clemson coaches matched LSU in this game. Burrow had Brady, and Lawrence was on his own. BV gave it all he had, Clemson Defense was also overmatched. Just a rough night.

Sorry, this reason is far too cliche in my books. HAD we done the most basic fundamentals of common sense playcalling and STILL lost, then and ONLY then would I be able to agree with the "better team" nonsense. But we didn't come close to playing by our own standards, players and most importantly, COACHES. The better team won in 2015 and 2017. I can't say that about 2019.

Re: TNET: Elliott knew he needed to get Etienne plenty of touches against LSU

Outstanding comments by Elliott. He took the blame. He didn't throw the players under the bus. He didn't whine about the referees. He did what all good coaches do after every game. Look back at the game and grade - not only the players, but themselves.

They normally don't make those grades public. But, I'll guarantee you that after every game the coaches debrief and say, "What did we do right, what did we do wrong, what can we do better?" And "we" refers to the coaches.

Elliott just gave the public some insight on the debriefing.

Definitely disappointed ETN didn't get any touches during the last 20+ minutes in addition to Galloway not getting a few more targets since he was effective early on. Wondering if a couple more receptions for him would've decreased the defensive pressure on Higgins and Ross.
