Is it just me, or . . .

With DJ in for 2020, and Taison only a year older, doesn't it seem that we should be zeroing in on a top-notch 2022 instead of bringing in a top tier 2021?

I would think that this recruit fills that need: Someone that won’t get bent out of shape if he he isn’t immediately in the 2-deep rotation.

I am thinking Streeter is searching among the three stars for a backup quarterback who isn't likely to go to the portal.

That makes sense, but the general rule is to bring in a QB in every class especially when Taison gets beat out and doesn't want to be 3rd string. QBs transfer so much, you need to bring in as many as possible.

Or you bring in a two sport who’s primary sport is baseball but still wants to develop and be involved on the football side.

Right.
Remember how at one point we had 6 guys in the QB room? Dabo said we could win with any of them.
A year later Trevor arrived and the 5 who were left started leaving. 4 games into the season we only had Trevor and a RS freshman named Brice who hadn't taken a meaningful snap.
We currently have a 5* starter with one year left, a 4* RS with full eligibility, a 5* freshman early enrollee, and ???
Is Batson still QBing? Do we have some other walk-on QBs?

Both Bubba and Lucas are 3 stars with meager offer lists

That doesn't mean they can't play, but I think at this point since we missed on our top targets, we're just looking for a body to boost QB depth. We'll go all in on a top 2021 prospect.

I agree because there will not be a top tier to come over in the 2021 cycle.

How do you explain to the kid that he wasn’t a consideration until your first two said no.

Same way as happened with Isaiah Simmons, Travis Etienne...

Trenton Simpson, K'von Wallace and on and on and on...
Clemson doesn't throw around offers as do many/most; the staff's open, honest about their board, where a young man falls and how he fits as the future unfolds.
It's called integrity, because scholarships are finite, and not because a young man might be unworthy or isn't good enough. It's real, lends itself in avoiding the awkward situation nearing signing day of too many verbals, not enough spots, which happens far too often at lesser places.
If open, honest communication is how you manage your life, business, program, then no explanation is necessary.
