They used to grow it on our family land in Colleton County. Right behind the old Pon Pon Chappel in Jacksonboro is a rice field. You'd never know it, but the old rice dikes are still back there in the woods, surrounding a swampy area. There are still canals coming miles off the Edisto which long ago supplied water to the rice fields.

land was growing rice, my family didn't own it. Colonel Isaac Hayne owned half, and Colonel Joseph Glover owned the other half.

My G grandfather had a very good poker hand one night, as my dad tells it.
