Some mangy high school recruiting news

May 19, 2020, 10:37 AM

And by recruiting I'm not talking about colleges recruiting high school kids, I'm talking about high schools recruiting high school kids. For years, large public schools have been silently recruiting kids, getting mom to move to their district so they can play for the local team. Then they become stars, the school gets publicity, fame, more people in the stands, and more $$$.

Well, my own tiny little private high school has one upped many of the state's largest public schools. Smaller, private schools are now offering a superior education to attract star athletes to their little schools. The athlete gets a quality high school education, with the added benefit of racking up monster stats playing other small schools and beating up on small private school football teams. The private school then gets the added publicity of having a top-rated athlete, and before you know it ESPN is on your tiny campus nationally televising a football game that would otherwise never be covered but for the star athletes.

Hammond is blazing the trail here for the private schools

School's been in existence for 60+ years. Always had a good athletic program, AMONG SMALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS. Never had a D1 college player at any sport.

In the past 10 years they've somehow managed to have one of the best college basketball recruits, and several top 10 football recruits, NATIONALLY. What are the odds?

The recruiting among big public schools for athletes has been going on among themselves for a while now. Bigger schools grabbing top talent from smaller public schools, allowing them to play quality competition, and bring in recruiters and $$$ to their sports programs.

But private schools are pulling the carpet out from under these big public schools by somehow attracting top athletes, with the lure of a quality education. Player gets the benefit of padded stats and being the star athlete at the school, whereas they receive a lesser quality education at a larger public school, where they're just one of MANY quality athletes.

But at the end of the day, those top college recruits who attend small private schools are as a disadvantage on the football field, even though they will have an advantage in the classroom. Personally, I wouldn't touch a top 10 athlete from a small private school. They're used to beating up on everyone smaller, and being the king of the school. D1 is a major wakeup call and they don't handle it well.

Keep an eye on Burch and Huntley.

Of course the other possibility is they may be operating a USC athlete pipeline as well. Their coach is a former USC player. Oh, and there's this:

lol, the charter schools around here are just as bad or worse than the public schools.

Accreditation is a struggle for some of them, IIRC.

Oak HIll Academy. About 300 students in 6 or so grades.

May 19, 2020, 11:47 AM

Maybe less students than that. Tiny school, middle of nowhere, Mouth of Wilson, Va. Top 2 or 3 in the country every year, their past players are a Who's Who of NBA. Carmello, Stackhouse, a bunch of guys. Clemson had a player come from there during the OP years, the left handed three point specialist (name slips my mind).

Had to look it up. KC Rivers.

May 19, 2020, 1:16 PM [ in reply to Milton "5 Star Smoker" Jennings*** ]

Had a horrible ankle injury, a lot of schools backed off him, Clemson stepped in. I once lived about 30 minutes from Oak Hill, went to see Rivers play after he committed to Clemson. Tiny gym, bleachers on only one side, maybe 100 people there, another 100 students. World class, future NBA hall of famers, doing their thing. Incredible to see. Rivers was not all that mobile (the injury was the previous year) but it didnt really matter where he was: Catch, turn, shoot, three, as many in a row as they needed.

Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham is basically a black church with a student body of like 12.

and they all happen to play basketball. At one point they were banned from competing in NC, so they were flying around the country to play in national tournaments.

They got in big trouble 10 or 15 years ago (payoffs/graduating players who did no school work/misuse of funds) and many college programs stopped recruiting their players.

but check out the alumni list:

Jarrett Jack.
Marquis Daniels.
Chris Garnett.
Tracy McGrady.
Brandon Rush.
Steven Hunter.
Cleanthony Early.
Amar'e Stoudemire.

I know GCA is in your backyard

May 19, 2020, 5:29 PM

and YES, they are a basketball powerhouse. I do have a friend who coaches another sport there (actually, more than one.) He is upfront about everything whenever I ask. He states the rule about sitting out a year, if they transfer from another district. GCA's district only has two high schools. Brookland-Cayce and Airport. There's not a wealth of talent coming from there.

I don't have a dog in the fight, both sides have pros and cons. If I were a public school coach I'd be worked up a little.

Oceanside Collegiate is making waves too and soon Legion Collegiate up in the Rock Thrill area will get going. The problem is only going to grow.

BC has brought in several players. Given momma a job, moved

May 19, 2020, 5:34 PM

kids in, etc. They then spent some serious coin on a new football stadium. They're playing the game too. Just interesting to see this current law bringing in private schools into the mix. They're stealing some of the best talent.
