Some Things Many of Us Didn't Know

Feb 20, 2019, 3:31 PM

From Record Books of Dolley's own Cedar Creek meeting in Hanover County, VA. From STRENGTH AND HONOR --THE LIFE OF DOLLEY MADISON by Richard N. Cote. (And yes, her name was spelled Dolley) Dolley Madison was a Quaker.

Between 1767 and 1769, Cedar Creek Meeting House members were disowned for:

Neglecting to attend meeting
Joining the Masonic Society.
Attending a Baptist Church.
Fighting
Using ill words.
Uttering profane expressions
Drunkenness.
Adultery
Moving out of state without endeavoring to settle with creditors,
Taking solemn oaths.
Engaging in military service.
Attending muster.
Marching in procession with music and weapons of war ,
Following the corrupt ways of the world.
Partaking of the "vain fashions and customs of the world, such as horse racing and frequenting places of diversion".
Frequenting places of sport and gaming.
And laying a wager.
Any act in support of slavery also made a member liable to swift disownment, including hiring a slave, purchasing or receiving manumitted Negroes, abuse of slaves. "selling one of his fellow men or women into bondage", or working as an overseer of slaves.

Marriage rules were strict.

Marrying at home instead of at Meeting was a punishable offense.
As was marrying a first cousin.
Marrying a partner who was not a Friend (Quaker), or being married by a hireling priest was cause for automatic disownment.
Second marriages were also a possible source of trouble, should the surviving spouse choose to remarry too quickly.

Well, who of you among all the Tigernettere plead, "Not Guilty"?

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.
