Some of you are so selfish

Oct 30, 2019, 11:57 AM

You just don’t want to see the game of CFB as we know it change even though allowing grown adults to make money off of their own name is common sense.

Sad world we live in.

...well my education wasn't free and I had to pay a lot of money out of my own pocket. I don't see this as selfish.

What does that have to do with a person making money off of a Jersey with their name on the back of it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some of you are so selfish

Oct 30, 2019, 12:05 PM

there names are not on the back of it. They get a free education and plenty of perks for said jersey to be sold in their likeness. The cost of the education far outweighs the amount of money they can make from the profit of a jersey. Furthermore, do you realize that when Matt Leinhardt was at USC the University only made a total of $54,000 in profits off of his jersey after expenses? There is not as much profit as you think.

You're full of it if you think the football players are only spending 20 hours a week at football. That's the maximum amount of hours they can practice, but that doesn't include "voluntary workouts" and I find it hard to believe they aren't expected to do a bit of extra film study during their own time.

I'll take your word on the Leinhardt example, but you're only talking about what the school itself made for his jersey sales. Let's say that Clemson made a profit of $50,000 on Lawrence #16 jerseys. Sure, that's not a ton of money for Clemson, but what did Nike make off of those? I'd imagine their profits are higher than that of the school, but even if all we're talking here is $50,000 profit, then what's wrong with the player getting 5% or whatever from it? If they see no value in the player in the jersey sales, then why don't they simply use 00 for the numbers on them instead of numbers of active star players?

What does that have to do with anything? Soldiers also choose to do what they do as do police officers, and most people would agree that they're underpaid. I don't get how choosing to play means they shouldn't be allowed to earn more, especially since it's basically the only option they have to have a shot at the pros, or earn a college education.

I also don't get how thinking a player should be allowed to earn something for their own likeness means you also don't think soldiers should be taken better care of, or how soldiers not being taken care of properly should be used as an argument to not better take care of other people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was put in much more dangerous situations than them to get my college degree FYI

The company (Clemson University) is not paying the players....they are simply allowing them to make money on their own name. I see it no different than allowing them to get a job at Subway.

Seems like a socialist mindset to tell someone they can't make money off of their own name. Are you a socialist?

Did the players help with the cost of stadium construction, improvements, groundskeeping, security, & concession on game day, after game cleanup, the cost of the dietician, nutritionist, surgeons, and all the other peripheral costs associated with a football program, such as travel, tutors, dormitories, etc?
Most football programs barely break even. Traditionally the players cut for their efforts is an education. It seems like a good deal to me.

And they're doing their part to earn that education by playing football. I don't see where that should prevent them from getting a share of sales involving their jersey. Sure, the #16 jersey doesn't say Lawrence on the back, but everyone knows which player goes along with that number when they buy the jersey.

Hell, I see jerseys where people have added the player name on the back of them all the time recently. I also see people asking on a Clemson Facebook page all the time if anyone can add the name of a player on the back of their jersey for them. Sure, the school isn't directly involved in that process, but as I said above, why not just put 00 on the back if the number on the jersey isn't supposed to represent anyone?

Oct 30, 2019, 12:20 PM [ in reply to Re: Some of you are so selfish ]

I have my own concerns about recruiting getting out of control over this, but I'm trying to wait and see what sort of rules get put into place before worrying too much. However, I've never felt comfortable with the basic argument of them getting a free education, and then comparing it to the average student that pays.

I do buy that argument in response to anyone claiming the players are treated as slaves, starving, or that they just get nothing at all in return, because certainly, an education, place to live, and food is much more than nothing.

However, the deal is supposed to be the player plays football and then gets those things in return. Why should that give the school or other people the right to profit further off of the players while the player gets nothing further in return? It's not even just the schools that are making this money. Look around the internet or on the streets prior to games and look at all the people who are putting players names on merchandise and profiting off of it. Sure, these things are probably illegal, but it's still being done. Why should some housewife on Facebook be allowed to iron Lawrence on some jerseys and make money on it, but Lawrence wouldn't be allowed to play anymore if he received a single penny for it?

They're not all instant millionaires after college though. I'm sure you'll say that most of the players that are able to make money on their own image are likely to make the NFL, but that's not always the case. Tajh Boyd and Woody Dantzler are two Clemson names that come to mind that didn't really get a shot in the NFL, but were popular enough while at Clemson to have made some money during their playing days.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Nah see I'm a lifelong Tiger fan. Graduated from there like most of you. Just crazy how some of you are so soft when it comes to differing opinions.

What's really bothering you?

I'm just trying to figure out how someone sharing a different opinion on a totally unrelated topic from Clemson/SC football gets instantly labelled a coot....

I would say I genuinely feel like my first one was unjustly taken down. I never used profanity, wasn't a troll. Can't get a response out of anyone why it was banned.

I don't think that's an excuse to break the user agreement.***

I can’t speak for anyone else but it’s all quite simple for me.

I watch and support amateur sports.

I like high school and college sports because of the amateur/academic angle.

I do not watch or support professional sports with a couple exceptions (track, rugby, tennis).

If we see a major change in amateurism in college sports I will do something else with my time and money.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Your logic is tragically flawed. Your assuming change means improvement. Only time and experience will determine who’s selfish here. It’s very hard to improve on the Clemson brand and the success we’ve had putting players in the NFL.
Change never guarantees anything.

I'm not. Let them make as much as they want however they can. But the NCAA is amateur sportsm and you agreed to play by their rules when you signed up and that includes amateurism. If you want to be paid for your sports, then find a place to play professionally.

No one is allowed to get paid for playing golf and still play in the USGA Amateur championships.

The players are very much aware of what they signed up for. There's nothing wrong with them wanting an opportunity to make money while they're in school, but they understand the rules don't allow it, and for 100+ years they have chosen to live with that because of the potential earnings waiting for them either through football or through their education.

Have some of the players complained? Of course. But it's the POLITICIANS who are trying to cheat the rules. If you want to blame someone, blame them.

If you want to play a game, you must play by the rules. If you change the rules, it's a different game. And as of yesterday, that's now what we have...a different game.

The USGA Amateur championship rules will change before long also. "Rules" are no longer rules. They are more suggestions. The times are a changing, and not for the better in my opinion.

Plus, you're dreaming if you think this is not just a return of the "bag man" only out in the open this time. I've no desire to watch sports controlled by people with bags of cash to lavish on a few select players while the remaining players get nothing...where schools with rich boosters can work out any shady endorsement deal they need to get the next Johny Football to sign with their team. Been there, done that.

A blanket payment by something like EA Sport to all athletes included for a video game is less problematic than Joe's Bama Pride Autos. The latter is nothing more than a public bag man.

And THIS is why it will end with schools paying players directly...to control the equity. The slipperiness of this slope we're now on is unfathomable.

Well, if you can call me selfish, I guess it’s ok to call you a slow and dumb. Are the facts of the situation too complex for you to understand how this spells the end of college sports ultimately?

How much will the 3rd basemen make on the ladies softball team. Sounds like a lot of noise for only a few on the mens football and basketball teams.
