So who are our starting DT's in 2019?

May 16, 2018, 3:27 PM

That's a huge loss losing Belk.

Yeah very tough - no way around it he is going to be a stud for someone.

Right now, it's probably Darnell Jefferies and Jordan Williams with Nyles Pinckney in the mix. Picking up Tayquon yesterday doesn't hurt - we were shooting for a lower DT recruiting number for 19, but I'm sure that changes some now.

Probably Pinckney and Jordan Williams, which should be okay. Depth will probably be an issue since only Jefferies will be behind them not counting 2019 freshman. This might push them to avoid a redshirt for Jefferies so that he picks up rep experience.

I'm somewhat concerned about depth though. Johnson looks like a good player but we don't really seem to be in it for instant impact 2019 DTs. Maybe this changes things though on that front if we can sell more early playing time.

I mean, Belk leaving should make some higher impact DTs ears perk up. The recruiting pitch now becomes "you can compete for playing time right away, sandwiched between the deepest and most talented ends group in the country. They can't double you in the middle."

That has to be appealing, right?

We were already thin at DT. Now, we are razor thin.

May 16, 2018, 3:33 PM

We've only recruited 4 DTs over the last 3 classes.

Let's hope for no injuries and that we were correct in our evaluations.

Pinckney and probably Jefferies.***

Pinckney, Williams and Jeffries are the depth chart

May 16, 2018, 3:50 PM

as of now. With the depth at end you wonder if they may try to beef someone up to move inside.

I think there's a chance XT split inside a little bit in 2019, kind of the reverse of what Wilkins did but probably not full time. He could line up as a 3 technique and I doubt many interior lineman would be too successful blocking him with his burst. Probably not something that would happen a lot but we'll have better and more experienced depth on the outside most likely and it's something that could be part of the rotation to keep guys fresh.
