Smart can't say it publicly, but he has to be MAJOR TICKED OFF!
Not only did the guy accept a ship. He comes on campus, competes for the starting job, apparently wins it, takes the first string reps at practice and now - less than two weeks before kickoff - he quits.
And, he says he isn't quitting because of fear of COVID. He is quitting to prepare for the NFL draft.
What a guy!

makes you wonder

Kirby Brings in Newman. Then, just a few weeks later, Newman learns Kirby is bringing in another highly touted transfer, JT Daniels.
Heard the coaching staff was VERY surprised Newman left. I wonder if they were as surprised as Newman was when he learned Smart brought in another transfer? I'm sorry, but I have to laugh. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
As far as backups, JT Daniels still isn't clear to play. Further, neither is D'Wan Mathis as he had Brain surgery in late May.
This leaves Stetson Bennett, a redshirt freshman. Trying to learn his second offense in 2 years.
This outta be interesting to watch.

Yeah, I was scratching my head with the Daniels transfer as well. Thought at the time that It was kind of of non-vote confidence for Newman. Further, why would a big time HS recruit want to risk going to a school with a rotating door at QB. While the strategy may be a short term bandaid for a season, it has to hurt them long term..

You hit the nail on the head!!
UGA coaching staff tells recruits everything they want to hear just to get them there. Then, at any chance, they'll bring in a transfer.
Watching UGA handle their recruits and their roster over the last several years, I understand why they've had several players leave over the years. It be one thing if the played all of them, but they don't.
Makes me more thankful how Dabo runs the program here with regards to recruitment, playing time, no transfers and transparency.

Pretty sure all four of the other guys were better.

He wasn't that much ahead of the backup punter and he would only have gotten mop up duty. They'll actually be better without him.

I can only speculate but it seems to me he felt his chances of starting were slim to none. If I were a coach I would be skeptical of these transfers who leave a team after years of leading that team.It would be very hard to trust that persons motives. Just saying

Went to a couple Wake home games last year.....if he was the leader in the clubhouse At this point they were only playing puttt putt. Most unusual offense I have ever seen by a college level team last year.....Over hyped.

That Daniels kid from So Cal was going to become the starter as the year went on.

Newman didn't shine in first scrimmage, peeps thought he would lose the job to Daniels maybe even before the first game. Some think he saw this and ran.
But he sure left UGA in a bind. All other positions are ready.

Watch about any other game and he's much better

They were down 2-3 of their best wide receivers with our game. Add that to the fact BV once again had a masterful Defensive game plan dialed up and they did nothing to adjust to it, meant a long day for Newman.

They were also having mad problems with our DT's crushing the pocket; I think they're used to having more room to operate that funky sorta-option they were doing.
Venables, again. He figures out what you like to do and blows it completely up. If you're going to beat him, it's always, always, always going to have to be with Plan B.
They didn't seem to have one.
