So the COVID-19 Bill requires companies that take money

Mar 24, 2020, 1:27 PM

provide a permanent minimum wage of $15 per hour.

That doesn't seem relevant to the issue at hand...

Why not?***

The relief is to help companies continue to pay employees

Mar 24, 2020, 1:31 PM

during this outbreak. Then saying - oh, by the way - you have to pay them more than the federally mandated minimum wage - seems to be someone's attempt to add legislation that they haven't been able to get through otherwise.

simply the business owner.

That is basically what the debate has been about. Republicans want more of a top down approach and Democrats want more of a bottom up approach. Unlike the recent tax cuts, Democrats want to ensure that the money is not primarily used for stock buy backs, dividends, and executive committee bonuses with so little making its way down to the employees.

T3,

I've read the bill and I found the restrictions on the slush fund to be totally inadequate.

First, Mnuchin has almost total power to say who gets want - and doesn't have to disclose those facts for at least 6 months.

Secondly there are get arounds to the nominal restrictions on executive pay increases and stock buybacks (and you know those guys will use them)

Finally, a main purpose of the relief is to put people back to work so we can keep the economy running, but there are almost no guarantees about worker protection attached to the slush fund.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can see mandating the money go to employees, but not

Mar 24, 2020, 2:08 PM [ in reply to It's an effort to ensure that employees benefit and not ]

mandating "Ok, once this thing is over - you're going to pay your employees more".

That's an obvious attempt to push failed legislation. Seems pretty low to me to include stuff like that during a world-wide emergency.

So, you think it's a good idea, you just want it to end.

Mar 24, 2020, 2:09 PM

When should it end?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No - if the idea is to pay employees during this

Mar 24, 2020, 2:16 PM

unprecedented time - then pay them. Once the isolation restrictions are released, they'll start working again (but not at a higher rate than they made before...)

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No one is forcing them to take the money.***

crisis, which completely defeats the purpose of the Bill.

Agree...and if small businesses can’t afford to pay a reasonable wage then they don’t have a sound business model to begin with.

1. Anyone working 40 hours a week should be able to live a decent life. You try creating a budget at 7.50 an hour.

2. Studies about raising the minimum wage have not shown the rise in unemployment that you project.

I agree. If a small business can't afford it, then they should go under or just not have employees. No sympathy from me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So what business do you run?

Mar 24, 2020, 1:49 PM [ in reply to Re: So the COVID-19 Bill requires companies that take money ]

Mine is almost 40 employees with revenue in the $5-10 Million bracket.

$15/hour benefits no one. It inflates the bottom. If Flippy McBurger suddenly gets $15/hr then what happens to all other wages? They must go up. Rent prices go up, food prices go up, everything inflates and the $15/hr worker are in no better shape.

We pay our interns and co-ops between $15-20/hr. Will that be good at a $15 min wage? Not likely. So we’ll hire fewer interns and co-ops. Unless you’re .Gov, money is finite and only so much to go around each year.

I’d rather there be no minimum wage. Let market conditions and skill dictate wages.

On the flip side though, we pay corporate welfare via taxes for public assistance for workers who don't make enough per hour to live on.

Would much rather that be addressed at a later time.

The minimum wage should be tied to inflation so we don't have to keep having the same arguments over and over again.
