RIP John McCain

Aug 25, 2018, 8:40 PM

he lived a heck of a life.

Yes, he did. But at the end of the day he was not a very honorable man but a very snide, vindictive one. Sorry, for his family though.

Re: RIP John McCain

McCain was a political opportunist par excellance in DC. He made a name for himself there by stabbing his conservative colleagues in the back repeatedly.

He went through a lot in his life. I respect him for that. But he is not near the top of the list of respected veterans on that score, because of how he lived his life once he was in DC. He was a petty, sad man in those DC years.

It's not that. Its more that he could not be counted on to do what he said he would do, and was always an opportunist. He was a persistent DC backstabber of the GOP. Which is the ONLY reason the Left revere this man now otherwise they'd hate him and spit in his face too just like they did all the other returning veterans.

Aug 26, 2018, 1:08 AM [ in reply to Re: RIP John McCain ]

I feel bad for you. You say "He made a name for himself there by stabbing his conservative colleagues in the back repeatedly" but never stop to ask yourself whether or not the conservatives deserved that vote. To me, "turning your back on your party" often times means sticking to your core beliefs even though the party in which you most identify with doesn't fall in line with your core beliefs. If you truly believe in a cause, why would you ever kneel to the party line? Isn't that what America is all about? Freedom of choice? How can you, as a true American, ever stand for a politician voting with a status quo that they don't believe in "because the party told me to"?? That seems contrary to every value our entire society is built on.

To me, while I didn't always agree with him, McCain was a good man. Based on your posts, you're "a good lil boy", a dog who just does what he's told with no independent thought of his own. It's certainly not too late though, if you decide to think for yourself at some point you can become a man. Until then, you sound like a coward.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, please tell me.....

Aug 26, 2018, 11:30 AM

Which is the conservative party? You have liberal and conservative. Always have and always will. Goes beyond the US even. The two ideologies are as old as democracy really.

So, who represents conservatives? Whoever it is, it's not John McCain.

The likes of John McCain, and his position in the GOP and in the Congressional power structure, explains EVERYTHING about why our current President is Donald Trump. Russians notwithstanding. But that can't be the message, so Russians.

Loled at the independent thought comment.

Re: So, please tell me.....

Aug 26, 2018, 6:14 PM

I think people are overblowing how much he didn't vote with his party...even with his "enemy" Trump, he still voted with him 83% of the time, and something like 87% of his entire career was voting with his party, which isn't all that much lower than the 91% average.

He was a liberal who stayed elected in AZ. by somehow sticking an (R) by his name. Re: RIP John McCain

Aug 26, 2018, 12:10 AM

Some persons herein have no character themselves based upon the poor example they set by their self serving political comments which is especially sad considering what McCain’s colleagues and actual opponents have to say in honor of his legacy as an American.

It is a sad circumstance when posters have no dignity toward an American who ultimately wanted what he believed served his country despite political differences. McCain’s family would be deeply offended by some ill considered words from posts in this thread. Put your personal commentary aside and mourn the passing of a victim of a horrid disease if nothing else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: RIP John McCain

Aug 26, 2018, 12:30 AM

Maybe this whole thread should have been posted in the Politics and Religion section or the Amphitheater. Definitely not football related...

But since we are here... Lot of John McCain "was a genuine hero" talk and John McCain was a "dewsh" talk. Like Dabo always says - things aren't always as good as they seem nor are they as bad as they seem. John McCain led an extraordinary life but he had his share of baggage too (basically crapped on his first wife). He was far from perfect but also faced things that very few of us can imagine.

No doubt the next several days will be filled with tributes and breathless hero worship - is it deserved? I frankly don't know as only those that directly served/interacted with John McCain know the real story of his time in the military and as a POW. I've always given McCain the benefit of the doubt on the POW stuff and tend to believe he served as honorably as most other American POW's in those God awful circumstances. McCain's cellmate seemed to have a high opinion of McCain's service in the POW camp so who am I to dispute that? I hold all those guys in high esteem for their service and suffering.

So the majority of my judgement of John McCain is based on those factual things I can discern of the man through his very public life as a politician. In that portion of his life, I'm not particularly a fan of the man and think he is a prime example of the need for term limits. Some of the things he has done to keep POW/MIA records classified is tragic for those families who simply want to know the truth. See the following if you are interested:

https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/mccain-and-the-pow-cover-up/

In his capacity as a member and Chairman of the SASC, his rhetoric, legislative and voting record can be summed up as "there's not a conflict he doesn't want to send our military into, and there isn't a veteran or military retirement benefit he doesn't mind cutting to pay for it." Like I said, as far as McCain's political career I am/was not a fan.

I will pray for him and his family - an extraordinary life that has now ended and I truly hope he is resting in peace.
