This is sad.

Nov 2, 2020, 9:02 PM

I have a feeling a lot of folks here can empathize with these stories. I know I can. There have been some strained relations (thankfully, no severing of ties) with family members, and, sadly, a falling out with one long-time friend who made it personal one too many times.

I hope we can get back to putting priorities first. None of these politicians actually care about you, and neither of them are worthy of your adoration or love at the cost of those who actually love you.

Nov 2, 2020, 9:29 PM

the article seems to blaming Trump for the divide in our country. There are a couple examples of democrats shunning their Trump-supporting relatives, but the whole gist of the article is this is Trump's doing.

And this lack of balance and objectivity is one of the key reasons we will remain divided as a country.

It covers the last four years, which focuses on people's opinions of Trump.

The bias isn't there in that article, except in the cases where someone just wants it to be.

The title is: "'You are no longer my mother': How the election is dividing American families"

So first, I'm assuming there are at least two candidates in this election.

You're right, there is no bias. It is a piece that completely blames Trump for the division in this country.

Nov 2, 2020, 10:14 PM

You said above that the article is about people's opinion on Trump the last four years.

That may be what the article is about, but the title it says the article is about how the election is dividing families.

Actually the article is about how Trump is dividing families, so it's closer to what you say.

I think everybody agrees that it is sad that politics are dividing families. But Trump didn't start it and he's not the only one dividing families that are allowing it to happen.

You said Keowee didn't read the article. I've read it 3 times now. It is clear that there are 5 democrats and 5 conservatives, but it's Trump's fault in each circumstance per the article.

Again, please give me specific lines from the authors.

Of course this wasn't new before Trump. It's gotten worse. They provide data to show how the divide has worsened under this presidency. No matter how you feel about his presidency, it's gotten worse during that time.

Yes, I think it's quite clear Keowee didn't read the article.

Again, specific lines, and not quotes from sources.

Nov 2, 2020, 11:15 PM [ in reply to Re: I didn't realize I had groundrules before I read it... ]

I’m not sure how else you could read the tone of the article

“ In interviews with 10 voters - five Trump supporters and five backing Democratic candidate Joe Biden - few could see the wrecked personal relationships caused by Trump’s tenure fully healing, and most believed them destroyed forever.”

introspection, etc. And the stories about how families are being affected should be told and understood. But its not about politics. Its like reading in an article that the major causes of divorce are money issues, failure to communicate, death of a child, etc. Might as well say that life causes divorce. Math

Nov 2, 2020, 9:55 PM [ in reply to Re: This is sad. ]

-First story is about a woman whose son won't talk to her because she supports Trump.

-The article says they interview 5 Trump supporters and 5 Biden supporters.

-Next story is a woman who supports Biden and separated from her Trump husband (doesn't say if that's why). She said two of her grandchildren won't talk to her anymore because of her politics.

-Next story involves a woman whose brother won't talk to her because she won't support Trump, and even withheld from here that her mother died.

-The next one is a woman who cut ties with Trump friends and for a while didn't speak to her father about it.

-Next is a Trump supporter who says the relationship with his son is now strained.

-Then a woman in Asheville who won't speak to her mother any more because her mom supports Trump, and she won't let her son. She also mentions that her mother tried to kick her out of the car for disagreeing on politics.

-Finally, a former Republican woman who now supports Biden. She has issues with family but they speak.

So where, precisely, are you getting this "90% of the stories were people that weren’t talking to Trump supporting relatives anymore."

The story is balanced. Period.

Trump mentioned 33 times, Biden 6 times.

The balanced story has a concluding section heading entitled, "UNCERTAIN POST-2020 ELECTION WORLD." No wait, it's "UNCERTAIN POST-TRUMP WORLD."

And it's concluding statement warns us of the unrest that will follow when Trump loses:

“And if Biden wins, I don’t think they will go quietly into the night and accept it.”

The story covers all four years, as mentioned. Biden wasn't a factor through all those four years.

The catalyst is Trump. Disagreement over him has ultimately led to pushing people apart. The election has heightened it.

It isn't made clear the woman separated with her husband because of Trump, which is unlikely. They separated after the election. And her grandkids won't speak with her.

I 100% disagree with this entire line of thinking:

...caused by one of the most polarizing presidencies in U.S. history could be healed if Trump loses the election.

It's complete bullchit. What has become polarizing is the rise of socialism and worse on the left. Don't blame this on Trump - what an elementary school take and one that echoes strongly in the progressive echo chambers.

Both Obama and Biden have said "fundamental transformation" when talking about the country. Not because the country changed overnight and all of a sudden became "bad," but because socialism and left-wing thinking has overtaken the democrats.

There is a clear and rationale explanation for and it is expected that families will be broken up if some endorse a move towards eliminating the USA as it has been known and goose stepping towards socialism and others do not.

What is sad is so many people have been duped into hating the country, duped into everyone is a victim (except conservative white males), and duped into everyone believes the MSM.

This is sad indeed.
