It is remarkable that they have had so many fails from the head coaching department . I mean , without going too far back they've probably only had 2 decent ones in my memory , Spurrier and Morrison .
Aside from that middling success they've suffered through poor hire after poor hire and haven't ever had the sort of longevity with sustained success the way a lot of other schools they compete against have .

Thats because their administration, student body, alumni and fanbase are so jaded. They hope to win, but deep down expect to lose. That sentiment is at base why so many USC people have Napoleanic little man syndrome where they want to take on and talk shiite about being better than every team they face no mind any evidence to the contrary.
Clemson folk, by and large, are not like that...we expect to win, and hope to not lose.
Thats at the core of the difference between their school and ours. And thats how its been for as long as I can remember.
I think Holtz and Spurrier might could have pulled them out of the morose were they younger when they were hired, but they were both on the downsides of their career and the effort to pull it out of the ditch was just too great. The USC football program has to be remade top to bottom completely from the admin to the school to the team to the fanbase, and its gonna take a heck of a lot of work to do because at bottom its a mental issue more than anything else.

that place really is right much of an embarrassment. Academically, they do not distinguish themselves, their football is pitiful and their fanbase is delusional and beyond rude.
for the good of the state I wish they'd get it t together a little bit

I think it's even simpler than what you laid out. SCU fans have a very inflated opinion of their team, no matter what the reality is related to their past success or current talent on the field. They always think "this is our year" and keep showing up to games regardless of the team's record. So there's no reason for the athletic department/BOT to change anything.
FGF posters seem to be catching onto this and have tried to get people to stop buying tickets, but thankfully for us, most of their fanbase doesn't know how to use a computer, and will continue to shell out their hard-earned gas pumping money to see the chickens go 4-8.

anything is ever, and I mean EVER, going to change for them.
They will ALWAYS be a third tier fall-back school for students with very few other options and Clemson's little 8!tc#.
