Should Numbers be Retired or just Recognized?

Jan 30, 2017, 4:42 PM

I'm all for special recognition, but retiring numbers ensures that the future generations to come don't wear, see the number or learn about said player. I think Steve Fuller was properly recognized when DW4 wore his number and the younger generation got to know more about Steve Fuller legacy due to bringing it back to life.

What are your thoughts?

I totally agree. I never have understood the fascination with retiring numbers. I think recognizing great players who have worn that number is beneficial in 2 ways. One, it shines a spotlight on those great players of the past such as Fuller. I'm sure there were tons of younger fans who didn't know who he was or at the very least who had no clue he wore #4. Secondly it could help with recruiting. Recruit a great running back to wear #28 or a great QB to wear #4.

If you retire numbers we will be running out of them pretty soon. Have you seen the guys on our roster and those signing wednesday. Forget the retiring thing

Retiring numbers for college players is a bad idea. The Ring of Honor is the place for recognition of the greats. And it should be a very selective process delayed by a few years as well.

Recognized. This isn't NFL...

These guys are here for 4 years max...

If we retire 15 numbers- you would have triple digit jerseys....

So that's the real question. Do we want Triple-Digit jerseys???
