Shark Bait

Aug 6, 2018, 8:53 AM
IMG_4198.jpg(204.9 K)

Last weekend a coworker sent me a text asking if Id be interested in purchasing a sailboat. He is a muscle car guy and hangs out with a guy who owns a restoration and hobby shop here in town. That guy's been storing a sailboat for someone who quit paying rent a year or so ago.

Friday we went up to check it out and its in great shape. It has about 90% of the parts and missing parts aren't going to cost more than a couple hundred dollars including getting the hitch for sonof's car. He already has the receiver.

While we're looking this thing over dadof says its in great shape and probably sold new for $7-8k and is probably worth $3500 now. The guy selling said he wants $950 and it gone asap. So we couldn't pass that deal up.

This model is pretty much an oversized wind surfer in 30mph winds

My main stick for many years was a Hobie surfboard. It's beat to death and now hangs on the wall in the bedroom. I did see a shark up close and personal ONE time.

You might not have to register it since it's not a power

Aug 6, 2018, 11:01 AM [ in reply to is this a titled purchase or is it technically stolen goods? ]

boat, I dunno. I'd think a sail boat under a certain length is probably considered like a canoe or kayak, but I have no idea.

Boating - Sailboats

Since July 1, 1974, sailboats over 14 feet in length had to be titled. If the sailboat had any propulsion it was also required to be registered. Sailboats during this time period that were 14 feet or less did not have to be titled but if they had any type of propulsion they had to be registered.

However, effective, June 8th, 1989, the law was changed which required all sailboats no matter what length to be titled. All Sailboats that have any type of propulsion need to be registered.

If you purchase a sailboat that is currently registered/title and you choose not to use any type of propulsion you will only have to title the sailboat.

That's a lifetime of checking the "yes' box on applications when it asks "have you ever been found guilty of a crime".

Because DNR lists it as a crime and it comes up on a SLED check, I had to do it last week for a gig for my expired fire extinguisher ticket in 2001.

16) Watercraft/Outboard Motor - Found/Abandoned

To title or register a watercraft or outboard motor that has been found, abandoned or where proper paperwork cannot be obtained to issue a clear title then you will need to complete an Affidavit In Support for Application for Title for Watercraft/Outboard Motor.

S.C. Law prohibits the sale or purchase of watercraft or outboard motor without a valid title issued in the seller's name to assign over to the purchaser at the time of sale. If you purchase a watercraft and/or an outboard motor without a title then you will need to obtain the proper chain of paperwork from previous owner(s), along with the fees and then you will need to complete an Affidavit In Support for Application for Title for Watercraft/Outboard Motor.
Affidavit In Support for Application for Title for Watercraft/Outboard Motor can be obtained by calling Boat Titling and Registration at 803-734-3857 for information and a form.
