Schools being online

Apr 15, 2020, 7:22 AM

It is gonna be something to watch how well this fares going forward. Will it work? Will is cause kids to be dumber than currently? How will attendance be tracked, just logging on to a class does not ensure it is actually viewed.

Universities are gonna have a hard sell on tuition without all those fancy building to seat students in as right now we are University of Internet.

As far as HS, maybe stop the lunacy of forcing kids to attend and arresting parents for truancy issues. If a kid does not want to go let them sign a waiver out and be done. WHy waste time and money on kids who mainly are there to cause trouble and take up space. Als maybe in additon to all those AP classes bring back areas which will actually prep kids for work. Maybe like auto mechanics, maching, HVAC etc.

Tax payer supported “free” online HS has been a thing

Apr 15, 2020, 7:35 AM

for awhile now in SC.

https://virtualsc.org/

As far as all the skills you mentioned, I don’t know about where you live, but in Spartanburg county, they are readily available to high school students but mommy and daddy want junior to go to college and are embarrassed if precious wants to take classes at the technology center.

So - problem solved. On to the next one.

Good info , the push that all gotta go to college is somewhat misguided and expensive. Plus a lot of tec jobs make more than those vaunted University degrees pay.

I agree with you, but I worry too many kids will get left behind. Mainly because their parents are lazy and will let their kids do zero school work. I spoke with one of my kid’s teachers and it blew my mind how few in his class were completing the online assignments.

seems like the cost is way down and counties should be refunding property taxes

bet they are working on that right now

If this move to online becomes normal the class will be canned by 1 instructor that all students will use. The cost savings are huge for taxpayers in buildings, maintenance, utilities, salaries and benefits. Even if done separately by the States for how they want to can the class.

I doubt it becomes normal. Early reports is that it isn't working well.

I can see it not going well currently since it was hastily tossed together along with it being new for students and parents. I think many things are gonna change moving forward though

One problem that's being reported

Apr 15, 2020, 10:31 AM

In fact, on CNN right now: Too many kids throughout America don't have the financial means or access for online learning.

It will be cheaper to supply devices and internet connection than operate schools in current form. Please note that I did not say better but cheaper

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It won't change anything

Apr 15, 2020, 10:33 AM [ in reply to Re: Aren't all teachers still holding classes?*** ]

online is already an option for most classes.

The kids who do well on their own are thriving right now.

The kids who don't, aren't.

Out of the students I teach I might have 25% actually doing their work consistently.

50%% have done at least 1/5 assignments.

25% haven't done the first assignment (even though they check in on the google form every day) and when I call home nobody answers and I get no call back.

So yeah it's a direct reflection of your normal classroom.

And that is why the push for University for all is misguided.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's funny that you think if all of them go to

Apr 15, 2020, 10:54 AM

universities all of them will graduate. Some won't graduate high school. I got 2 that it's highly doubtful they will ever get out of 9th grade.

It is the push by many here, college for all and it is a must.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm more along the lines of college for all who can

Apr 15, 2020, 11:08 AM

get in. Raise standards for universities so every tom #### and harry can't get in with a 15 ACT. But if you can get into college then it's free (tax payer subsidized). Then make community colleges/tech free for all who can't crack it in universities.

Oh, and those dang empty busses I drive past each day pulling in to schools. Why are we even paying to run them when the parent dropoff lines are blocking the dang roads?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow.

Apr 15, 2020, 10:56 AM

Re: Wow.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:07 AM

SO paying for busses that are empty is financial genuius? Nope, it is not.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those buses weren't empty on the route.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:10 AM

A lot drop off at one school, then drop off at another school, then have 1 or 2 to drop off at another school, then go to the bus lot.

For example, they like the get the young kids off first. So they will drop off all elementary school students they picked up on their route, then drive to the high school and drop off the 3-4 high school students. Then turn around and drive back to the elementary school where the bus lot is.

Just because they are empty when you drive by doesn't mean they rode around empty or picked up 1-2 students on a route.

riding around on routes empty every day?

Re: So you're saying the school busses are

Apr 15, 2020, 12:58 PM

Yes and the lines of parents dropping off their kids are backed up causing traffic issues as they spill out in to the roads. When I say empty it is 4-7 kids on a large bus.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And you've seen the entire route?

Apr 15, 2020, 4:12 PM

You know there are no other drop offs?

Re: Why should they do that?***

Apr 15, 2020, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Why should they do that?*** ]

I think the school buildings are still operating (thus needing power). I would hope that saved bus fuel could go to boosting the SC bus fleet, which is abysmal.

Schools didn't expect this crisis, and taking away funding during this time won't help things.
