Saw where Virginia has also refused to bowl...

Along with BC and Pitt. I suppose all the sec teams will take whatever spots with their 2-8 teams, extra point specialists and shoe tossers.

Bowls should not be played this year. What is the point if fans can't go?

If the team wants to, it’s a net gain for the school financially, and we can watch a few extra CFB games in this chithole of a year.... spot the dang ball!

Not I Virginia’s case. Unless a team gets say 2 million to each team. The schools lose money. Example. 150 players coaches and wives. The band with 200 members. Go down a week early. Stay at the Hyatt, not motel 6. Feed 350 people fr a week. 2 chartered jets. 12 chartered buses. Not hard to spend a million or so

These players have been basically locked down since this summer. They haven’t been able to spend much time with their families. They’re tired and ready to take a break and see their families for Christmas.
Honestly I think the only bowl games that should be played are they playoffs and New Year’s Six. All the rest are totally meaningless and should be canceled.

I think refused is the wrong word. Refusing to do something means you’re pushing back against something that you’re required to do are supposed to do. Nobody’s required to go to a ball game. A bowl game is a privilege. Given this year and everything that is happened I can see most teams not morning to go through the BS and go home for Christmas. I think saying most schools are opting out or deciding not to continue the strict protocols just for a meeting with bowl game is a better way of putting it. Again, like in my other post, all they really need to play as the playoffs and maybe the New Year’s Six.

It is required in that the ACC has bowl obligations. Now, I get them not going in order to give their athletes and break and let them go home to see their families. Seems reasonable after all they and everyone have been through.
But, ostensibly the ACC makes money from these bowl games (primarily coming from TV, not tickets) and then the money is split 15 ways (normally 14).
So if our guys are giving up the holidays with their families in order to participate in the CFP, then the schools who could go to a bowl but choose not to should not get their share of the CFP money.

Great point and I’m thinking technically you are correct. The ACC as a conference has a contract with some of these bowl games, but not the schools themselves. Which is why Clemson going to the playoffs puts the loser of the ACCCG in a bowl that was contractually set up for the winner of the conference. So basically everyone moves up a spot. Which probably means Boston College will be replaced by whoever is next in the standings after all conference games have been played.

What I can't figure is why multiple teams from the ACC...

...are doing so? Especially 6-5 Pitt and 6-5 BC teams that actually deserve a low tier bowl bid. Heck even UVA is 5-5. Haven't seen other multiple same-conference teams opting out of bowls (yet). What is driving this?

I just dont get why teams do not want to play. I believe if they could realize what alot of us realize as you get older, never refuse to play a game while your young. The rest of the world will always be there, enjoy being an athlete for what is probably the last time for 97% of the players. I can promise them, what ever hoops you have to jump through to spend time with your teammates, 20 years from now you'll be glad you did.

I think a lot of teams will opt out of bowl season this year

simply because the young men on all the football teams have been living a very locked down life (much more so than us fans) for the past 20 weeks due to the COVID-19 protocols. These men are physically and mentally tired who would rather get out from under these strict protocols to spend time with their families than to play in a bowl - and who can blame them.
It is one thing to continue to go through the strict COVID-19 protocols in order to play in a premiere bowl or the CFP. It is quite another to subject these men to several more weeks of continued locked down protocols just to play a single meaningless game in the Spurtle Spoon bowl.

I don’t disagree, however there are some teams....

Playing regular season games this coming Saturday or just played Saturday....and the first bowl game starts this Saturday. For a lot of teams, it might be another week of practice and protocols ....but it’s not several weeks this time around. But using that same reasoning...there’s not the ‘extra bowl practice’ to be gained either. I do think the spending time with families is a reason....but I’m not sure it’s the main reason the schools themselves are turning down bowl games. I truly don’t understand how anyone thinks it’s a good idea for some of these 8 or 9 loss teams to play in a bowl though. Haven’t they had enough misery for one season?
