STUPID PINK STUFF - Starman57

Oct 16, 2015, 8:07 PM

This is from only a few hours ago, but man is it a good post. Deserves to be put back to the top of the board . . .

That's part of the problem these days [1]

People actually think do-gooderism and "awareness" actually cures disease.

Well....it doesn't. Hate to break the bad news.

My sister is a breast cancer survivor and it's a pure modern medical miracle that I still have her around. It's due to a lot of smart people doing endless research and testing that allowed this to happen. We live in really blessed times because of these efforts.

Not one pair of pink socks or shoes did ANYTHING to affect this outcome.

The sooner the pink fad fades the better.

Stupid . How does it do harm ? I am glad that his/her sister is a survivor , and of course it was medical science that made that possible ...but wearing pink to show support isn't about the treatment stage , it's about the before and the after .

I didn't say it was related to the treatment stage

Oct 16, 2015, 8:17 PM

But the fad is useless and, by this logic, why not wear any and every color for other awareness months, prostate cancer, heart disease, et al.?

The reason we do it is b/c we've gotten to a point where folks who dont' want their teams traditional colors soiled by conspicuously incongruous colors for the sake of self-congratulatory do-gooderism can't say so without getting all sorts of crap from the do-gooder enforcement brigade types.

It's a nasty profit scam. It's really sick.

Oct 16, 2015, 8:23 PM [ in reply to Re: STUPID PINK STUFF - Starman57 ]

There is a massive amount of corporate profits involved, dwarfing any research contributions. If people spent their money directly on research 10 times the amount would go toward helping people. The pink crap is exploitation. I don't support it.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It's a nasty profit scam. It's really sick.

Oct 17, 2015, 12:46 PM

Yea it really is sad. The foundation itself does a great job trying to fund breast cancer research, and the idea of a pink ribbon or wearing pink makes sense from an awareness standpoint (though I think it's unnecessary at times). But companies like the NFL who sell "pink" products usually send fractions of fractions to breast cancer foundations. It's a shameless profit grab hidden under the guise of "caring".

Keep it up . . .

Oct 16, 2015, 8:19 PM

The main thought is awareness. You sound like a character repeating double-speak out of Nineteen-Eighty Four. Awareness? Other than those in comas for the last 15+ years, who is not aware of breast cancer and breast cancer research? Wearing pink football uniforms accomplishes nothing.

And even if it meant something, it's further diluted by the fact that everyone does it. Some for most of the month.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Keep it up . . .

Oct 16, 2015, 8:23 PM

So you think doing things to help others , to bring solace in a difficult time in millions of women's lives ...or show support for these sick and possibly dying human beings ... is useless and dumb ?

It does more harm than good. There is a corporation that

Oct 16, 2015, 8:25 PM

sues other not for profits who who use copyrighted phrases like "for the cure."

They pour money into marketing at the expense of research,. It's the least efficient way to support the fight against cancer.

The nebulous concept of "awareness" is the manipulative tool that the breast cancer exploitation cartel uses to lull people into their trap.

Re: STUPID PINK STUFF - Starman57

Oct 16, 2015, 8:45 PM

First let me say how great it is that your sister is still enjoying life, thats amazing! As much as you might not like 'pink' for Breast Cancer or "purple' for Epilepsy etc...the colors represent the research dollars you mentioned. I watched my grandmother die from breast cancer 25+ years ago because the research budget was 1/1000th of what budgets are today. A lot of the money was raised by people doing different challenges or selling pink or purple themed clothing etc... It is that money that provided the amazing doctors the ability to help your sister while years ago there was no significant fundraising. You can hate the colors but you can't argue that they represent significant efforts and dollars that have advanced medical technology dramatically.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pink uniforms haven't saved a single life.

Oct 16, 2015, 8:54 PM

The reason they exist is to market football to women. The reason it persists is because mouth breathers think that you don't care about cancer if you don't support pink uniforms.

I, like most people, have lost several family members to cancer. Consumer-driven slacktivism makes us worse off as a society.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Pink uniforms haven't saved a single life.

Oct 16, 2015, 11:12 PM

so..if the pink on uniforms reminded 10 women to go get mammograms and find out early they had breast cancer and survived because of early detection....it was a waste??

Maybe if some of our own family members had found the cancer earlier, they may still be alive.

It can't hurt. The nfl and college players are not made to wear pink. It is their choice

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you really think pink uniforms are increasing the numbers

Oct 17, 2015, 12:05 AM

of people who get mammograms?

If so, then we should wear disease themed uniforms all year round... or cancel sports all together and focus on saving lives full-time.

It's arbitrary to select one illness, and then select one gimmick and say that without this gimmick, people would die. It's a bogus argument.

Wouldn't a breast cancer commercial, urging women to get screenings be a more effective form of spreading awareness? It's not about saving lives as it about making uniforms pink to get more women involved in football.

Some people don't like to challenge the status quo.

Oct 17, 2015, 12:07 AM

And when others do, it annoys them. They prefer to go with the flow, and anything that upsets that flow is anathema. I don't blame people who behave that way, but not everyone can stand that approach.
