South Carolina is about 3/4 the size of Georgia on the map,

but half the size population wise. Yet, Georgia is LIGHT YEARS ahead of our state when it comes to high school football talent. Why? Maybe most of us here in the Sandlapper State are old foggies like me who ain't makin' young'uns anymore? Gotta be more to it than that. Some of you brainified peoples please elaborate on this subject. We got lots of time to kill before the game NEXT Sattdiddy.

I think it primarily has to do with just metro Atlanta itself... pulling in 1,000s probably 100,000s of transplants every year but can't say for sure. Just a guess

Atlanta has always been Atlanta.
South Carolina has gotten worse more than Georgia has gotten better.

Many who either coach or have close connections to high school football reporting say that the problem is removal of the 8-quarter rule in football.
High school players used to be able to start for JV on Thursday night and dress for varsity on Friday night as backups or emergency players in case of injury.
SCHSL did away with this rule, citing safety reasons, and it has really hurt the majority of the small schools around the state. I'm not sure of the GA rule, but as you said with our smaller population it affects our state a lot more.
Many teams who used to field 3 high school teams had to drop their B team because they didn't have enough players to fill 3 teams since nobody was allowed to double up.
Also lots of sophomores and juniors would would have been JV starters have to be kept on varsity to sit the bench now in case of injuries. Kids are not willing to sit and watch and so they find something else to do.
Also the players who stick around are missing out on the development they used to get when they could play JV for a couple of season while getting to dress for varsity also. Now many athletes are missing entire seasons of on-field development while they sit as backups.

every coach I've talked to as well. It's a shame. I understand both sides of the argument, but it appears this isn't very beneficial for the kids that want to play football and be a part of something. It's taking late bloomers out of the equation bc they can't enjoy their football experience. Pretty much just sucks all around.

The biggest problem has been that unless a school is a traditional football power, almost everybody from 3A down is struggling to get enough bodies to fill their teams.
Most people don't notice because on Friday nights the coaches can put a decent roster out but many of the JV teams are a patchwork group and are having to use a few middle school kids to fill out the roster who are not even close to ready for JV football.

More money is pumped into the school districts to develop high school's athletic facilities that open doors for developing better athletes and opportunities for them.
South Carolina doesn't focus that hard on this. If half of the districts in South Carolina would have the same vision as Dabo for developing facilities and athletes for better opportunities.....high school football....etc...would be positively different in the state of South Carolina.

South Carolina has a very weak recreational football system, with each area choosing between county run, commission run or privately run. This creates huge areas of the state with no recreational football available. Areas with huge well run recreational football programs tend to have better high school ball. Dutch Fork and Byrnes are examples of this We need to promote youth football to get back to where we were years ago.

Most of the Middle School coaches in Georgia dont want kids out of rec ball. They wsnt kids who have not been taught bad habits.

Those numbers include water. land area is roughly 57k to 30k, or 52%.
And metro Atlanta has more people than all of SC. It's pretty much purely a numbers game.

I live in Georgia in a border county. HS Football in Georgia is really like the movie Friday Night lights. Its worshiped. Cross the line into S.C. and the passion seems to fall off by about 50%. Small counties with populations at 20,000 regularly put 6 to 7,000 in a stadium on Friday night. Then you have Atlanta where H S. Football is big business.

Purely a case of population as mentioned above. The influx of businesses and corporations into Georgia - a lot of them escaping the rust belt and the associated high taxes and higher wages there - and therefore the jobs attracting more people. The growth began in the 80’s, and shows no sign of letting up.
By the way, Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi. Though the majority of the state’s population is in the Atlanta metro and northern third of the state.
Alibi comment: after reading comments about some of the ‘rules’ differences - by those of you more knowledgeable than I on those subjects - I agree it is more than population numbers; but stand by the premise that ‘a much larger sample size’ to choose from yields a greater number of (quality) players. You don’t coach a person to be a 6’ 6” and 240 pound QB, etc.

Metro Atlanta for sure but also other areas in Georgia just have better coaching and better player development. A few affluent counties and high schools in South Carolina are exceptions. But larger areas in South Carolina just do not coach and develop high school football players to the level that equivalent counties in Georgia do. The numbers of high level recruits coming out of Georgia ready to contribute right away compared to SC is too disparate to blame population alone.

My oldest 2 grandsons played travel football all over the southeast and beyond. When it was time for them to play 7th grade football (Middle school). The SCHSL has a rule that you cannot play both. That puts S.C. athletes at a disadvantage as N.C. and Georgia allow them to play both. The travel teams they were on were coached by former college and NFL players and they were required to show their grades. They had better coaches than they had at the Middle Schools and had to work a lot harder and had to earn their spots. So once they get to 7th grade they have to make a choice where those in other states do not.

It’s not just the population difference that favors Georgia, but specifically the metro Atlanta area. Metro ATL area has more people than the entire state of South Carolina and that population density is a huge advantage for Georgia. The concentration of people leads to a concentration of resources and talent which creates an environment for competition that’s on an entirely different level.
