Road Games and Standing Advice

Sep 25, 2019, 5:38 PM

Heading to UNC this week. My seats are on the visiting side. I don’t attend a lot of away games and I have never had a problem in the past.

Like most Clemson fans, I enjoy standing during the game. As a Clemson man, I also want to be respectful of the fans seated behind me.

How do you guys address our standing tradition with opposing fans? Has it ever caused problems and how do you deal with it?

what's "our standing tradition?"***

There's something in these hills.

always stand

Sep 25, 2019, 5:47 PM

when they throw crap at you, keep on standing, when they dump a beer (which seems to be available now) on your head, keep on standing, if they whack the back of your head hard with something blunt, you can fall down

never turn around

Problem is the UNC crowd doesn’t drink beer and eat Pnuts, they will be throwing wine and caviar on you so bring a tide pen.

You are giving them way too much credit.

Their fan base is comprised of many rednecks and trashy people. They are definitely beer drinkers. Think cheap beer out of a can. Their AD is named Bubba for crying out loud.

Easy. If no one else in your vicinity is standing you shouldn’t either. Same as when you’re in Clemson. HTH

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I only stand on kickoffs and key 3rd downs

Sep 25, 2019, 5:59 PM

unless the #### in front of me stands the whole time.

No problem either way.

You guys must be big wigs or sit in the upper deck. I stand most of the game. So do most of the fans I’m around. They ARE called stands for a reason. I have a neighbor that never, ever sits down. She pisses some people off but she’ll offer to switch seats if needed.

Seriously, anybody ever run into problems? How did you handle it? Just wondering.

Your game ticket has a SEAT number on it. Nothing more infuriating than some ill mannered jerk standing and blocking your view all day. I have hip and back problems and my wife has had both knees replaced. We cannot physically stand for 4 solid hours. Be polite and SIT in your SEAT.

Just a little story from 1979. At the Notre Dame game, we stood a great deal. An older women near by, asked an older Clemson man to sit down. His response was "I drove 18 hours to get here and I am not about to sit down now, Ma'am. The Upstate accent made it a real treat to hear.
Tell someone what I told a women who asked me to sit down so she could see the UNC game in 1996, "If you wanted to watch this game sitting down, you should have stayed home and watched it". So I am the south end of a north bound mule.

Well they are called stands but they are also called seats. Confusing times we're in....

I do what people around me do. But I'm seldom with earshot of the team or eye-line of the cameras.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TBH if no one is standing in front of you and people

Sep 26, 2019, 4:01 PM [ in reply to Re: Road Games and Standing Advice ]

behind you ask you to sit then you should sit. If they go to the usher, you'll be asked to sit or will be told to leave/escorted out. You don't have a right to block someone's view like that. Most of the pro stadiums I've been to don't even wait for someone to complain to the ushers, the ushers are already on top of it and make people sit. I recall this being the case in at least 2 of the 3 national championship games I've been to as well. You will likely get away with it if you're in a complete Clemson section but not elsewhere and even in the Clemson section you should be cognizant that not everyone can stand like that or get out of their seat quickly for that matter.

I prefer to stand since sitting feels cramped to me but I generally just go with what's going on around me. I would just talk to the ones behind you. I always do anyhow because I am well above average height and want to make sure they can see if both of us are standing. I haven't had anyone complain yet for talking to them.

"Standing Tradition"????

Good Lord.

There are only two standing traditions I'm aware of..

Sep 26, 2019, 6:54 AM

The National Anthem...and the Alma Mater. All else is a function of the game and the crowd in your vicinity.

"Standing tradition", my donkey.

It ain't rocket science. If the folks in front of you are sitting, YOU should be sitting. Otherwise, you're being just plain rude and self-centered.

A) it amazes me the smartass responses to a simple question. I AM a Clemson Grad. This isn’t twitter. Not sure why some of you “get off” on being jerks to fellow Tigers. I hope our fanbase isn’t turning into Alabama.

B) Hopefully the UNC fans aren’t us douchey as some of the people on this board.

Q1. If you are watching a game on TV in your home, do you stand for most or all of the game?

Q2. If your grandchild, wife, friend, or anyone blocks your view while watching a game on TV, do you ask them to move?

If you answered "yes" to Q1, then I would expect you to stand during a live game.

If you answered "yes" to Q2, then I would expect you to sit during a live game.

I have never heard of anyone objecting to someone standing on a kickoff, touchdown or an exciting play. It's the continuing to stand the entire time, even when there is no one standing in front of them. At my age I can't stand for long periods of time and, fortunately, I seldom encounter this problem.

It’s funny but I do stand at home when watching games live. I only stand at games if people in front of me are standing or it’s an appropriate time to stand. I’m a big guy and try to not be inconsiderate of those around me.

We had security threaten to throw us out at one game my sophomore year for standing in the student section. We were the top row in the lower deck and the people in the booth behind us complained.
Of course we pointed to the people in front of us who were standing. The guard just said to ask them to sit. "And if they don't"?, we asked. "Your problem", he replied and walked off with a warning that if we stood again, he'd escort us out.
Still pisses me off to this day, and I wish I would have pressed the matter to see what would have happened.

Road Games and Standing Advice

Sep 26, 2019, 8:55 PM

Clemson does not have a tradition of standing during games. Never have had it. Never should have it.

If you are a person who stands a lot or all the time at Clemson games, you should reconsider how your behavior impacts others and can interfere needlessly with the enjoy others get out of the game. If the people in front of you stand, you can stand. If there is a big play going down and you gotta stand, ok, do it. But if you walk into the stadium intending to stand the whole game, you're simply being rude.

It would be especially rude to go into an opponents stadium and routinely stand and block the view of the home crowd would might want or need to sit. If our team, Clemson, is leading most of the game, it's simply rude, inconsiderate and inappropriate for you to stand most of the game blocking the view of others.

BTW, I'm near 70 years old and have been attending games home and away as a Clemson fan for 52 years. I cannot stand for the whole game, but I'm there. I'm yelling my head off and I stand when the game calls for it. Give me and others like me a chance to see most of the game, even if we cannot stand for hours.

If you always stand despite having solid advice of the rudeness of it, I hope that you live long enough to understand how rude your behavior was.

That sucks. We always stood in the student section mostly out of necessity because way more students were cramming into the lower deck student section than actually had tickets for it. Good times, but things are probably much stricter now.
