Replacing pontoon carpet with vinyl or woven vinyl flooring

May 4, 2020, 9:36 PM

Going to replace a carpeted pontoon deck. Trying to decide between vinyl or woven vinyl. Moisture retention is my biggest concern because of mold / mildew issues. Is the woven vinyl just as moisture resistant an the regular vinyl? The cost of the woven vinyl is about $36 plf. The cost of the regular vinyl is about $23 plf.(it's a 24' pontoon boat) Appreciate any advice.

Thanks for giving me something else to consider. But I don't think that's a viable solution.

Go with woven vinyl. It will still get hot but absorb a little of the heat. Regular vinyl you won’t be able to walk on it, god forbid put a dog on it.

So the lower heat difference is worth the additional cost?

There's something in these hills.

Mine came with woven vinyl and I like it

but I have no idea how regular vinyl would be. If you are only putting it on the open areas between the seats, it would only be a few yards - no need to put it under storage areas is there?

Vinyl sounds pretty slippery to me.

I would look into resurfacing your deck with a composition material such as Trex. Last forever and not as hot to walk on as wood and other surfaces.

Infinity or MariDeck luxury woven vinyl flooring...

are great options.

Both of these products are specifically designed for watercraft so they're slip-resistant, they repel water preventing deck rot, and they resist fading.

While you're at it, I would also suggest replacing the decking with new marine grade plywood.

Not a difficult do-it-yourself project.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I've got the woven vinyl on a fiberglass deck. I didn't really care for the look at first, but I love it now. Cleans easily and dries out quickly. Traction is great.

Vinyl is inherently waterproof. Will not absorb moisture but moisture could get beneath and develop mold/mildew. Have you considered synthetic grass? Typically from polypropylene which also is water proof. Would be cooler, almost non-slip, more comfortable.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.
