Replace kickoff with punt??

If we must do away with traditional kickoffs (much to my regret), can we replace them with punts from the kicking teams 40 yd line?? Punts tend not to have full on collisions since the players are closer together and have to meter their speed to avoid over running their coverage area. And, punt returns have as much excitement potential as kickoffs. Any contact with the punt returner prior to the catch is treated at least as severely as targeting.
What say you?

It's great having Potter on our sideline for sure.. but even now several teams have kickers who can do the same, and before long most Power 5 teams will. At that point, the kickoff will just be an uninteresting time wasting event. Heck, either just start a new possession at the 25 automatically, or implement punts to replace kickoffs. The latter would by far have more excitement potential for the fans.

I think that we've had kickers capable of putting it through th endzone the past number of years but were coached to kick to the one to try to pin the returners. With the new rule there is no incentive to do that so we are letting them kick through.

I say keep the kick off but award 2 points if you can kick it through the up rights.

What would the rules be for this punt? Does the defense line up on the 40 and rush the punter? What happens if the punt is blocked, or roughing the punter is called? The biggest question however is what happens if late in the game the punting team is losing and wants to kick an onside punt?

Could see an unintended outcome being more injuries to punters. Be a huge benefit to blocking punts. Down a score, late in the game, why not send the house and hope for a blocked punt?

Your right about trying to block the punt when your down, but the question was about executing an onside punt when the kicking team is down.
