No. 3 Clemson Rolls By Wake Forest 82-24
NY Times / AP
Published: November 1, 1981

CLEMSON, S.C., Oct. 31— Chuck McSwain ran for 90 yards and three touchdowns today as unbeaten Clemson defeated Wake Forest, 82-24. Clemson won its eighth game and scored more points than any other team in Atlantic Coast Conference history; the previous record was set in 1954 when Maryland beat Missouri, 74-13.

Clemson scored on all but two possessions, and had 49 points by Halftime. The Tigers set a team record for total offense, gaining more than 750 yards. Cliff Austin scored two of Clemson's touchdowns, on runs of 4 and 3 yards. Clemson's longest scoring effort came on the first play of second half, when the quarterback Homer Jordan connected with Perry Tuttle for a 75-yard touchdown. Later, Tuttle caught another touchdown pass from Jordan, this one a 25-yarder.

Wake Forest (3-6) scored on passes of 17 and 5 yards from Gary Schofield to Kenny Duckett, a 1-yard run by Carlos Cunningham and a 22-yard field goal by Phil Denfeld.

My first game also, and like the others mentioned, the poor WF mascot ran out of push-up power too.

On the video, Jim credits Otis Lindsey with the long run

because there were 2 #44s(neither had a name on the back of their jersey), but it was fellow freshman Crawford

They were calling freshmen players out of the stands...

so they could dress and play in the second half.

This was back in the day before the NCAA limited scholarships to just 85 and Clemson still had a JV squad.

I was there, on the hill.....remember the Deacon doing push-ups.....thought I remembered it being hot. Remember the paper saying (afterwards) that they pulled a RB out of the stands at halftime and he scored in the 2nd half.

I was 10, remember getting the Sunday paper at grandparents house for Sunday dinner and reading every article, still remember just being in disbelief of the stats. Never punted that game.
