Random Question: Do you think USC and Clemson....

Mar 12, 2020, 8:23 AM

Do you think USC and Clemson would switch conferences with each other if they could? Would Clemson want to join the SEC and show that they can be dominant day in and day out? Would USC want to join the ACC and have a "cupcake" schedule (since that is the only reason we are successful, haha, jk)? Would one switch and not the other, would both switch, or neither? I got into a bit of a debate with a friend and would like to hear other peoples thoughts about it... thanks.

Uof6C wouldn't want to switch i think.

The only thing they have to crow about is being
in the SEC.

They are really really proud to be the SEC doormat and laughing stock.

100% As far as Clemson joining the sec, we would be just fine. We seem to fair pretty well whenever we play, and frequently we win those contests, which proves we would be very competitive over there. We certainly would be a whole lot more competitive than usuc has been.

USC left the ACC because of academic requirements.***

Actually, they left primarily because of basketball. At that time, only the ACC tournament winner was elligible for the NCAA Tournament. USC had a great BB team for several years running--several top ten ranked teams, several ACC regular season winners. But for various reasons, they never were able to win the ACC Tournament--at that time, the only way to get into the NCAA tournament from the ACC. They also did not go directly into the SEC, since they would face a similar problem in winning the SEC BB Tournament--at that time, Kentucky was normally the annual SEC Tournament winner. Therefore, they were independent for several seasons before getting an invitation to join the SEC. By that time, the opportunity to get into the NCAA BB tournament had greatly expanded past just accepting conference tournament winners.

While having lower academic requirements was a side benefit for leaving the ACC as an independent (& eventually as a SEC member), that was never a primary reason for leaving the ACC. In any case, lower academic requirements was never a major issue for USC fielding a top-notch BB team! Now football was an entirely different story for lower academic requirements--however, football was never a primary consideration for originally leaving the ACC!

Frank McGuire wanted to leave the ACC...

Mar 12, 2020, 9:38 AM

because the leagues new academic requirements exceeded the NCAA minimum and Frank could no longer recruit the functionally illiterate players from the northeast that he had been targeting.

There was certainly some angst towards the league office...

as well, but the primary reason was absolutely the ACC's stricter academic requirements.

Frank also thought that playing as an independent would be an easier path to the NCAA Tournament and it probably was, but that move nearly bankrupted the uof6c athletic department.

The better question is:
When is the last time the SCAR lamecocks have beaten an ACC team?

Absolutely NOT !!!!

All those trips to the west coast would be murder, not to mention expensive, on the players and fans.
