The renderings are clearly way different from the initial approval and the cost went down 7 mill.

I also didn't see where the broken pool cue option was discussed.

the first image was the first renovation before value engineering, not the current design.

not much to the existing structure, except they are replacing the roof panels and opening up the corners. Most of the budget is in the new practice facility and coaches offices. It should be a good draw for recruits.

So we are good for another 5 years

$63 million dollar stop gap. Gotta love our commitment to basketball. We will be planning another renovation that will fix LJ in 5 years. With what we have spent the last decade we could have built a brand new coliseum. We will have spent more in renovations than it cost SC to build CLA. Long live the LJ roof and rusty beams!

Just to be specific, the term "value engineering" (in the post - as reported) was never used by Rad, but certainly refers to the process undergone during all facility design iterations. And you're right, these images present initial design concept's, not the "original design", and certainly not the "Final Design". As such, they provide a basis for "order of magnitude" cost estimates, as well as providing a basis for dialogue concerning functional considerations. The design process for all major facilities - with the agendas of so many users, bureaucrats and bill payers to be satisfied - is a huge and unforgiving task, for all involved. And as the old saying goes, you can't please everybody all the time.... The design process is the construction of a three-legged stool, requiring a balance of cost, quality and schedule. The further you reduce one, the further you must reduce the other two, and quality is invariably the first to be sacrificed. Such is "value engineering".

I work in the construction industry I am fully aware of all of that but I also am not a moron.
We were sold on the original plans and the bait and switched into this new half ### design that still keeps one of the ugliest buildings on campus largely the same.
That is a cut plain and simple he can sugar coat it with whatever BS he wants but the scope of the project was cut. It went from a large scale renovation to lipstick on a pig when it comes to the actual arena itself. When your selling point is "there will be hand rails" then you are wasting every ones time and money.

I couldn't have stated it any better! I about fell out of my chair when I read about "handrails everywhere" comment. While I do not know him personally, I imagine he can lie without missing a beat. The reason I know this explanation is BS ....the keeping of the upper deck seating and therefore killing the open concourses he bragged about in the video update regarding LK recorded last summer. This is an insult to anyone with half a brain, in my opinion!

Have you ever eaten at the " Tattooed Moose " in Charleston? I'm headed down there and wondered if you've ever been there?

Thank goodness we still have those handrails. We are reduced to bragging about a basic functional element of a building as if it would bring increased use, beauty, or fan enhancement. Nice handrails there DRad. Can we get those in safety yellow too?

Me too - but hey, don't get too excited. I mean, there won't be handrails on the urinals... but it's good to know they're bringing Littlejohn up to compliance with the current International Building Code. We'll finally have something to hold onto (other than our equally inebriated buddy, or whoever) when negotiating those steep steps in the bleachers... (or seats... or do we still call them bleachers?... I honestly have no idea.) Anyway, here's to the LJ coliseum renovations with handrails!

I just want a seat that I can actually sit without having to butter up my butt to squeeze into. I may be large, but I'm not that dang big.
