Public service announcement - flu

Dec 22, 2019, 2:47 PM

So, Type A flu has been spreading throughout my office. One strange thing...

One person got tested and her nasal results were negative for the flu but her throat test came back positive a couple days later.

I left work early on Wednesday and went to the urgent care because I had quickly developed a cough and could tell I was getting a fever. Got to the urgent care and had a 103.5 degree temp.....but no flu. No flu?!?! Are you kidding me? I went from fine to feeling like Death in a few hours. Before I left, the nurse practitioner told me to come back the next day if my fever did not break.

Thursday...i was miserable. Chills or sweats....could not sleep from it. Went back to the urgent care at 6 pm. Guess what? I had Type A flu.

So....if you think you have the flu....maybe go back and get rechecked. They gave me xofluza (sp) and by Friday morning my fever had broken and I felt almost human. Note that the xofluza was hard to come by....had to drive to a pharmacy 20 miles away to get it.

Stay well!

Regret you are among the many flu cases that have been reported. Did you have the flu shot?

I got the flu about 15 years ago and get a flu shot every

year now. The flu is not that big of a deal when you are young, but oh boy is it rough once you get a little older.

I think it covered two strains of A and two strains of B this year from what I read. Some in my family are afraid to get one and that's crazy. I felt nothing when I got mine.

Yes, I did get the flu shot

Sadly, this one hit really fast. Wednesday morning I felt fine. By noon I was getting concerned...by 3 pm....i was burning up.

Public Service Announcement: The nasal flu test is not easy to do on most people so many times the specimen is not adequate for diagnosis. Not to mention an inherent false negative rate in any lab test, flu swab included. In the presence of fever, body aches, chills, upper respiratory symptoms and known or suspected contact, the CDC recommends treatment for flu, a negative flu test notwithstanding. Also this year’s vaccine is only about 50% effective (but better than past 2 years rate of 25-35%)

Good to know.....sadly the urgent care would not prescribe for the flu...

Not without a positive test.

Strange thing is that Wednesday I did not have any nasal symptoms yet....just cough and fever. Nasal symptoms came Thursday morning.

I have never gone from healthy to very sick that quickly in my life.

My understanding is a flu test is only about 50/50.***

Lol...well that was certainly my experience!

Sometimes the flu test is done before there is enough of an antibody response to get a positive test. If your temperature is 103.6 and you have body aches, etc., you have the flu!
