Philip Rivers. Is he a lock for the HOF?

What say you?

As a Chargers fan I hope so but I don't think he is a lock. He has some records for games played in a row but you could argue that he isn't even a top 5 qb in the league right now.

The Chargers should give him 1 more year next year for a final year. Tank the following year and go after TL.

Not fathering the most children...With 9 kids I’m sure he’s not even in the top ten.

Maybe fathering the most kids with the same woman though. Possible

Jan 13, 2019, 4:19 PM

I actually think he's a lock. Even though he tends to look bad in cold weather, especially in recent years as he's gotten older, he's still had a phenomenal career.

He's 6th all-time in passing TD's ahead of guys like Moon, Tarkenton, Elway, Unitas, Montana, among others. He's also 8th all-time in passing yards, 8th in career passer rating and 9th in completion percentage.

Even without a Super Bowl appearance those numbers will get him in for sure.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. Never won anything. Just like his college career***

Yes, it’s hard to ignore his longevity and stats.

Jan 13, 2019, 10:19 PM

Some will knock his lack of playoff success, but I don’t hold that against football players since it’s really hard for one player in football to will his team to victory.

Put him on the Patriots and I’m confident he would have plenty of playoff wins.

Judge, you are usually spot on. Not now, however. Being average for a long time will pile up the stats, but in the end you’re still average. Rivers is somewhere between average and good. He is NOT an NFL Hall of Famer. If they ever build an NFL Hall of Average, he’s your guy.

If putting up numbers over a long career without any playoff success on the resume is good for HallOfFame then Matthew Stafford will be a lock.

Being average gets you replaced in today's NFL. This isn't an era where guys like Kerry Collins and Drew Bledsoe can stick around for 15+ years and wind up with volume stats. Rivers has been a good QB for his entire career. The Chargers just happened to unfortunately have their best seasons when Manning and Brady were in their primes.

body of work...He will surpass 60,000 yards and 400 TDs in the next year or so and that is certainly HOF worthy

Lock for the whiners HOF. There isn't a bigger baby in the NFL than him. Not a fan.

Re: Philip Rivers. Is he a lock for the HOF?

Jan 14, 2019, 5:36 AM

I don't think he's a first ballot lock, but I do think he'll get in.

Compare Rivers' TD-Int ratio, his completion % and his passer rating to Jim Kelly, or Dan Marino, or Dan Fouts, and it's obvious that Rivers deserves to join them in the HoF.
