WRU Recruiting

Oct 24, 2020, 5:43 PM

Do you think we missed on the WR recruiting the past couple years?

"I love this place, I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die - up there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays; then I won't have to go Heaven; I'll already be there."- Frank Howard

No. If we had Ross we would be set and some of these younger guys will be great.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would have the outside threat that we desperately miss,

Oct 24, 2020, 5:56 PM

but it's not going to make Joe adjust to the ball in the air or help Frank catch more than 50% of the balls that hit him in the hands...Some of these guys need a ton of work

True. With Ross there wouldn't be such urgency for them to be great, but they aren't ready and obviously we don't have Ross.

Hopefully by the end of the year Joe and Frank will be ready

to step up

Our biggest problem seems to be we recruited the same type

Oct 24, 2020, 5:53 PM

WR instead of mixing in some variety...With the exception of Spector, it seems like we only sign 6-3ish guys who can run fast in a straight line...We have a roster full of Charronne Peakes instead of having a guy who can high point, a guy who can run a screen,or a guy who can move the chains...It was a much bigger issue last year without Powell and a fully healthy Rodgers

One thing for sure ....

When the ball is in the air the real receivers get most of them. That isn’t true with this Tiger team. Six games in and we are still looking. I hope we get results soon.

Imagine how bad our WR's corp would be without Rodgers. We would be a mess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would, because we showed last year that we can't

Oct 24, 2020, 7:40 PM

adjust our offense to the WRs we have but will instead just plug a square peg in and run the same round hole playcall...Which begs the question, again, why didn't we recruit the type of WRs we need to run our freaking offense

Agree. Our recent WR recruits seem to be good straight line. With the exception of a few don’t have speed to separate and don’t come in with good enough route running skills to separate. I was hoping that could be developed while they are here but it seems to be very slow growth, if any. Lastly, only a few can catch reliably. Again I would have though practice would help but we are half a season in and don’t see much change. We need more like Ross and Higgins that can take the top off with speed and go get the ball with their hands when covered. Ross was a big loss this year.

Re: WRU Recruiting

Just wait until we see the WR room next year. Let’s assume Ross doesn’t come back. It really doesn’t matter to make my point.

Ngata: 6’4
Ladson: 6’3
Williams: 6’3
Ajou: 6’4
Beaux: 6’2
Dacari: 6’3

And then Spector/Stellato/Taylor in the slot.

We are going to have a bunch of tall dudes with a few slot WRs. We aren’t going to have a great screen-type WR. But, we’ll have a QB with a massive arm.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We had a better version of that last year, if we don't

Oct 24, 2020, 7:46 PM

adjust our scheme, it won't matter

Nice to have all that length but gotta separate & catch the ball.
