One of my concerns is being #52

in Pass offense (258.2 ypg) (52% of total offense) is a little disconcerting.
I wonder if the miraculous performances last year of our elite O line, receivers and QB have sort of softened their edge a little.
Part of that I think is the enormous pressure placed on these guys by the fans and media. It's no one's fault, it is just a part of the game.
Secondly, I think that given the enormous amount of film available to study us has forced Tony and Jeff to try to change the play calling, which is taking time to get used to. For example, last year we owned the middle. Ross across the middle, Higgins across the middle, Amari and Renfrow lived across the middle. Just behind the linebackers we owned people all the time.
I think they've tried plays geared more to the sidelines than last year. We're having enough success there but it's not as productive given the limited space our talented receivers have to operate in.
Oh we an send the long ball to Tee, Diondre or Justin to great success occasionally. But you can't live there. We have a great running attack which helps a great deal and I've seen some beautiful twists....who knew that ETN could throw the ball that well? That was great!!
I could be wrong in all of my conclusions and ideas and am perfectly willing to be corrected. So I would love to hear what you guys think of our passing situation as this stage of the season?

A lot of that is simply that Trevor has only played about 60% of the year , and we scale it back when the 2nds and 3rds are in because it means we're cruising and Dabo doesn't like to crush fools more than they've already been crusheth .

We are also 15th in rush offense and 12 in total offense. You have to consider we are one of the few balanced attacks (almost equal yards per game in rushing and passing). A lot of other teams are not balanced at all (i.e. Washington State, LSU, Alabama etc...) and rely on their passing game to move the ball. Obviously, teams can win being unbalanced but were these other teams more balanced in their offensive production we would not be ranked as low as 52.
Something else to look at in the passing statistic is that we average 12.49 yards per completion. Compare that to the #1 ranked passing team Washington State (12.18 yards per completion), #2 LSU (14.38 yards per completion), and #3 Alabama (14.74 yards per completion) and we are pretty much gaining the same amount of yards when we throw a completion. Our current completion rate is lower than I like (62%) but I fully expect that number to improve as we hit our October/November stride - seems like this happens every year.

Dude, you CANNOT be serious. This is the same offense that torched Bama 9 months ago. A little rust maybe, but you are way overthinking this. They will be rolling by playoff time.

year. That alone deflates the numbers somewhat. And, lets face it, Trevor has not been as accurate as last year on some longer throws. But, he and the rest of the offense seemed to turn it around last week, even though the totals were still relatively modest.
Before the season started, several of the "analysts" predicted the offense would have to carry us until the talented, but young in experience defensive players grew into their roles. Instead, it has been the defense who has carried the day early on.
We are rounding into form right on Dabo's schedule, and will be in high gear come time for the Championship push.

As others have pointed out, I think the blowouts contribute quite a bit to the low passing numbers. I also think the play of the defense and our running game does as well. Against FSU we scored on a pick 6 which made the score 42-0, and took away any chance of Dabo sending our 1st team offense back out there. We also ran for 320 yards in the game including ETN putting up 127 with an average of 7.5 per carry while he was in there.
Against GT we ran for over 400 yards, and ETN had 205 yards on only 12 carries which obviously limited how much we had to pass.
Of course things haven't been 100% perfect outside of those things, at least not in the UNC game. However, I don't think we have any issues with our ability to throw the ball with a lot of success whenever we need to. That's looking at the UNC game as one of those unfortunate once a year type of performances of course.

Also on the site that factors sacks in as negative use in passing yardage per attempt we are 26, twice as high. Another interesting stat is Clemson is 7th in Rushing yrds per attempt and Uo5C is 6th. When calculated the original way, with sacks against rushing yds, Clemson is 7th and Uof5C is 77th!

Our passing numbers are reflective of two things.
A somewhat slow start (maybe a little rust or maybe trying some new things) compared to expectations and several games where we ran the ball well early or scored so quickly that we stopped throwing.
Ga Tech and FSU were out of hand early and a big part of those early leads were contributed to success on the ground. This meant that we chose to pass less instead of actually being stopped.
Against Charlotte was similar but we also rarely throw for a ton of yards on lesser teams because we know coming in the game should get ugly.
Finally I think we ran our offense slower against A&M to make sure we were protecting our defense. At that point it was untested (it still is somewhat) and our coaches didn't want a second half similar to the one in College Station.
