Why do we attempt field goals?

I understand there's certain game situations where you should but I'd rather just go for it. Four plays is a lot more than 3, especially when your offense is loaded with way more talent than almost any team you play.

With our current kicking situation

It wouldn’t surprise me if we go for it in close games.

Right now I think we’re trying to get Potter on track so he can be more reliable at the end of the year.

What a crazy game that was.

Bowden should've benched the coaching staff instead of

the kicking unit.

I think the actual quote was "We're through kickin' ! "***

Same reason we put in 2nd /3rd stringers

To get the experience. That's how you develop players. Real world experience. We need to practice kicking FG because one day we'll desperately need 3pts.

Yeah you and another poster both made this point and it makes sense. I just hope we go for it more in big/close games.

On the drive before the missed FG we did go for it and got 0

We sent in the heavy package and we failed to score...I recall it was 4th and goal.

We also get 0 when we miss field goals though...we obviously wouldn't convert every time. I just think we'd score more points if we went for it more instead of kicking field goals.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess you should explain it to all the HS, College, Pro...

...coaches who apparently doing it wrong. Let me know what they say.

Nfl teams are going for it on fourth now more than ever. https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/02/nfl-football-teams-fourth-down-plays/

I was talking to people after the game who were saying we should have gone for it.

I told them, and I still think it's true, that Dabo sent out Potter so he could kick a confidence building easy FG. He knows we will need a FG at some point, like we needed the first one at UNC, to get some points in a tight game.

I thinks that's why Dabo got so upset with Potter after the kick. He gave Potter a chance, when Dabo really wanted to go for it and score a TD, and Potter somehow missed a glorified extra point.

Grayson Atkins, the kicker from Boiling Springs who is now at Furman setting records. He killed it in HS, too. Just as strong a leg as Potter but more reliable on FGs. Averages 44 yds per punt, too. Won the Chandler Catanzaro’s Top Kicker in South Carolina Award coming out of HS. And he was a Clemson legacy. Hope Potter gets it together. We're going to need him at some point. This benching should serve as motivation, but time will tell.

Grayson will be an NFL kicker one day

Oct 14, 2019, 1:05 PM

Brian would have been thrilled to see him go to Clemson too.
