Charlie Whitehurst made his first career start against the Blue Devils and completed 34 of 52 passes for 420 yards and 4 TDs






The 420 passing yards set a Clemson record which stood for 10 years until Tajh Boyd first broke it 10/25/12 vs Wake Forest.


Down 24-10 and facing a 4th down, Whitehurst connected with Ariese Currie on this 4th QTR TD that allowed the Tigers to claw back, and eventually take & hold the lead on a late FG.

I was there at that game. Some pretty bad defense for our Tigers from what I remember.

Glad we pulled that one out, but it wasn't easy on the ticker!

I look at the depth and extent of our talent today and I am in awe of how far we have come since the Tommy West and Tommy Bowden eras when we regularly went into games unsure of the outcome.

That Duke team finished 0-8 in the ACC and 2-10 overall. Two years later we lost to a 2-9 Duke team in Durham and were their only conference win.
