On 10/17/15 I met the famous 50's RB George Usry while picnicking at Game

And Bet you can't guess his neat nickname (please don't google). He was a fantastic runner for Coach Howard & was so energetic & full of stories along with his beautiful bride of 50+ Years.
Hint..starts with a P and ends with an O.
This man is a Clemson legend in his own right and should be known & remembered!

LBB--I was in the Class of '60 with 'POGO' and he is genuinely a real nice guy. In those days, the FB players lived in Johnstone or the old barracks like the rest of the male student body and most of them assimilated into the normal routine easily with the regular students. George can tell you some great stories about Coach Howard, Coach McFaddin & Coach Jones; not to mention some real laughers with tales of Herman---our infamous trainer of those days. As you may recall, I was a good friend of Clark Gaston before he even got to Clemson.

Was in NOLA for the Sugar Bowl game and saw POGO and the boys lose a heart breaker. As we were driving to stadium , heard on radio that Castro was entering Havana.

George is a personal friend and has returned to Clemson after his retirement. He has had some health problems but still chipper and wears a big smile. George was originally from Waycross, GA. I worked in Waycross for awhile back in the 1940's so we can chat about "how it was back then".

where does he live? I remember him. Think he played in

the LSU bowl game when we wore the "suger blues" jerseys. I had one of those jerseys for years but it is long gone. Sure wish I still had it.
Also, right after the Orange Bowl when we almost beat Colorado, Charlie Bussy gave me his jersey in the locker room. Picture was in the Greenville News. I kept it forever and 15-20 years ago I sent it to Charlie along with the Greenville News picture. Within two days, he called me ecstatic. Said his grandchildren were going nuts. If you old timers recall, those jerseys had a flap in the back that came up through your crotch and buttoned to the front of the jersey. Purpose was to keep the jersey from hanging out of your pants so an opponent could grab it to help tackle.
Anyone remember them?

... he got his nickname because he was from Waycross, GA, fictional home to the cartoon character "Pogo". The 1957-59 Clemson team that Frank Howard recruited had over 20 players from north of the Mason Dixon line. Being from way down in south Georgia made "Pogo" Usry an exception.
