New Story: This Five-Peat is REALLY special

This Five-Peat is REALLY special

The success of a college football program is measured in wins and losses, and by any measure Clemson has had an unprecedented run of success over the last five seasons. It's a five-peat that everybody can be proud of.

History speaks for itself, if repeated often enough. Repeat this "only 15 in the history of college football" often! Great job all 'round.

who are the other 14?

Nov 16, 2015, 9:05 AM

done several searches...find a few mentions... but no list

fairly certain that FSU, Texas, and Va Tech on on the list

probably Oklahoma and Alabama, since they have the most 10-win seasons

I would suggest Nebraska too.

Here is the list of the 15 schools.

Nov 16, 2015, 10:05 AM [ in reply to who are the other 14? ]

I did a little research and found this:

Alabama: 1971-1975 (5), 2008-2014 (7 & counting)
Boise State: 2006-2012 (7)
Clemson: 2011-2015 (5 & counting)
Florida: 1993-1998 (6)
Florida State: 1987-2000 (14)
Marshall: 1991-1999 (9)
Miami: 1985-1992 (8)
Michigan: 1901-1905 (5)
Nebraska: 1993-1997 (5)
Northern Illinois: 2010-2014 (5 & counting)
Ohio State: 2005-2009 (5)
Oklahoma: 1954-1958 (5), 2000-2004 (5)
Oregon: 2008-2014 (7)
Virginia Tech: 2004-2011 (8)
Texas: 2001-2009 (9)

It's almost unbelievable that the list doesn't include Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee and USC. Also, the streak by Florida State (14) was very impressive.

If Clemson can lengthen the streak to 6, the list will go down to 10 or 11, depending on whether or not Northern Illinois can continue the streak.

Very impressive! Go Tigers!

I guess add Fl.State with 14 consecutive years -- GAWD.

Thanks, was surprised to see Marshall in this list. I did not know they had that kind of program...after what that school went through...nice to see them there.

When Danny Ford was here, what was his record as far as the number of wins he had each year?

When did this start, since years ago a team had to stay unbeaten to get 10 wins....showing my age?

I don't think Marshall counts

Nov 16, 2015, 12:56 PM [ in reply to Here is the list of the 15 schools. ]

Their first year in 1-A/FBS was 1997, so only 3 straight 10 win FBS years for them. Is there another team you missed?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't think Marshall counts

Nov 16, 2015, 3:23 PM

You beat me. Does that also mean Michigan doesn't count too because we didn't have FBS/Div-IA back then?

Someone's got to figure this out for me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think I've got it, maybe,

Nov 16, 2015, 7:05 PM

USC won 10+ games from 2002-2008 but then vacated the 2005 season because of Reggie Bush. I think they are probably supposed to be on the list instead of Marshall.

But you raise a good point with Michigan. The organization that became the NCAA formed in 1906, and was renamed NCAA in 1910, so I don't think anything before 1906 should count. Otherwise wouldn't you also include Yale and Harvard and maybe others. I'll look for another to replace Michigan. May be another team that vacated wins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

update

Nov 16, 2015, 8:21 PM

Looks like the first bowl game was after the 1901 season (but the 2nd bowl wasn't until 1915), so maybe 1901 is what is considered beginning of FBS. So 1901-1905 Michigan would count in that case, but Yale also had 10+ wins from 1901-1905. Maybe USC doesn't belong after all, and Yale should replace Marshall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good job on both counts, but if USC games were vacated...

Nov 16, 2015, 9:14 PM [ in reply to I think I've got it, maybe, ]

it still shouldn't be included, should it?

It's pretty much like Penn State before the NCAA restored the wins, JoePa wasn't listed as the winningest coach and Penn State wasn't listed among the top-10 winningest college football programs.

Anyhow, I read two articles mentioned the 15 programs, but neither listed them. Hopefully, they'll eventually sort it out for us.

I questioned Dabo getting a chance. I said who the %#+? is Chad Morris?! I was born in 1971, my first game was Clemson vs SC in 1977. My father was a season ticket holder as far back as I can remember. I watched, or listened to every game on the radio from that day forward. I was spoiled by the success of Coach Ford. I EXPECTED to win every game we played. Always have, always will. Then, Ford was forced to retire. Ken Hatfield took a championship team 10-2, I thought the sky was falling. It was! Tommy West was a bad joke played on us by the football gods. Tommy Bowden played his role. He started to rebuild. Once he could take us no further, I was hopeful for the next legend. I NEVER thought the answer was a man very close to my age. Dabo came along, and has slowly built Clemson back to what I've always known Clemson to be. Never out of any football game. We can play with anyone in the WORLD, This is what every fan, and player must believe to build the proper "culture". This is what every coach means when mentioning the word. It hasn't been a perfect run, yet. We are well on our way! Regardless how the season turns out, Dabo has succeeded in changing the culture. Once a coach does that, championships come! Talent is drawn to a culture like this! If you would have asked me 10 years ago who would rebuild Clemson, I would have said Rich Rod. Ask me today, NOBODY but Dabo! I'll silently eat my crow with a huge grin! Because Clemson football is back to where I know it belongs! It's always GREAT to be a Tiger! The only fear I have of Bama is them wanting OUR coach! You cannot have him, he has been adopted! Go Tigers!!!

You weren't the only one. There were plenty of CU faithful that didn't want Dabo hired but don't hear any complaining from them now. I even hear some coots say he is a good coach. He's not good, he's GREAT!!!

My first Clemson game was Clemson V Coots on November 24th, 1962. That was 3 days before my 10th birthday on November 27th. I have been a Clemson fan for 53 years on 11/24/2015. IMO, Danny Ford and Dabo Swinney has given Clemson fans some of the best ever seasons that Clemson fans alive today has ever witnessed. Goooooo Tigersssss!!!

I remember going to games and happy as hell if we beat NC or many of the teams now that we as fans expect to win every year. The first loss after 25? Years to Virginia was a heart breaker. Clemson has achieved so much and I hope we are now forever able to sustain a winning tradition

Go Tigers! Once A Tiger Always A Tiger

This really is a big deal

Nov 16, 2015, 12:41 PM

I'll publicly state I didn't know what we were doing hiring Dabo (currently scarfing down crow at a high level). But consider this, our next recruiting class has been seeing CU win 10 plus since they were in the 8th grade. Good grief, talk about a culture change. What a foundation!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

this is a skewed "record"

Nov 16, 2015, 1:07 PM

since they play so many more games than they used to.

For the first 100 years of college football, teams only played 10 or 11 games. Went to 12 regular season games in what, 2006?

I think 1978 was the first Clemson team to ever play 12, counting a bowl.

Teams who did this before the year 2006 is WAY more impressive than doing it today. When Dabo uses all those stats like winningest senior class (and he LOVES doing this) its because players play 4-10 more games during their career than they used to.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: this is a skewed "record"

Nov 17, 2015, 12:10 AM

True. Apples & oranges. They didn't play two or three non-conference "gimmies" either. Few people on this board have been around long enough to know that & even fewer WANT TO know. I am not fond of all the "jawin' & "braggin". There was a saying down around the Okefenokee Swamp in the old days - where outhouses were not always available but the woods were. When someone was braggin' about what they could do/would do there was a standard response - "Yeah, you're gonna skit & fall back in it." I believe that the equivalent term in upstate SC was, "Do it, then talk about it." I like to see the Tigers win as much as anyone. I go & make as much noise as my inhaler will help me make. I just don't go around pretending that if the Tigers are winners, I'm a winner. For the record, I listened to the 58-59 Sugar Bowl on the radio. I've been around a while.

I'm surprised that no one called you a coot. Maybe they'll get me.

Consider current streaks:
Alabama
Clemson
No Illinois

Two years ago there were 4 teams that had finished in the Top 15 for past 3 years:
Alabama
Oregon
South Carolina
Clemson

Whose still there? Still pretty special.
