OK. I have now taken the time to read up on onsides kicks.

I have to admit I was mistaken about the call made against us in the SCar game last year. I thought the play was reversed because the ball did not touch the ground before being caught by Peake (I think that's who it was). In actuality, the rule is more complicated than that.

The play was reversed because we interfered with the SCar player who had the right to catch the kick, since it had NOT touched the ground. Had the ball touched the ground, there would be no issue with interference. IF it touches the ground, the ball is live and must only travel ten yards before being recovered by the kicking team.

In the case last night, no Clemson player was interfered with. Had we had a player attempting to catch the ball, it would have been ours. Since the front line retreated immediately, the Bama players had a clear shot at catching the ball. I cursed the PAC12 officials for not reversing the call. I owe them an apology. RATS!

Seems that our kick return guys would be coached to make certain the ball is kicked deep BEFORE retreating. Same kind of issue with the blown coverages all season on wheel routes. Safties MUST cover any receiver before committing to stopping a run play.

It is what it is. Dabo is right--a few plays made the difference. I hope these things get addressed. Actually, I'm confident they will be.

Yep... If Kearse signals fair catch then Bama would have been unable to catch the ball in the air. He was within a catching distance to the ball.

You can't just wave your hand and the defenders must vacate. Your player actually has to be able to make a play on the ball.

He wasn't in range, and he still would have had to catch the ball. If he calls a fair catch, and doesn't catch it, it is a live ball. He was in no position to catch it.

You are correct he still would have had to catch the ball.... BUT he would have to have been given the CHANCE to catch the ball.

Bama catching the ball in the air would have been illegal at that point.

True...They would have to have given him room to catch, but I don't think he would have made it there. And the position he was in likely would have muffed the catch anyway. It sucks, but hopefully the coaches remember that.

I agree that it would have been a difficult catch but it would have taken away the ability for Bama to catch the ball in the air. From there it would become a scramble drill and who knows what happens.

No it wouldn't have. Kearse wasn't close enough to get his hands on the ball so it would be impossible for him to be impeded.

Totally agree. There is not one single poster that...

wants him here on our board, yet he continues to show up and clutter it with meaningless drivel.

Thank you man, we needed that clarity. It's nice to have you here today, thank you for being on your rivals board the day after they played for a National Championship and fighting for 4 quarters against a team you have wet dreams about

I was caught off guard by that onside kick. I knew that the Bama player could not forward it and I'm pretty sure he knew it too since he immediately stepped out of bounds. I initially thought Dabo was upset that one of the Bama players may have been off sides but the replay didn't show that so I was then confused about why he was so angry...

Before this game some Bama fans and I were coming here. You guys stated that "after Clemson beats Bama" that we wouldn't have the courage to show back up and take our lickings. It was stated that we actually would show back up regardless, to take our lickings or to congrats..

Exactly correct. There is no blaming the refs for this loss

We just got beat, plain and simple. It was a he!l of a game, and one our young players can learn from and grow from.

Now just get ready for tigerqueenie to reply with "refs suck, sec cheated, blah blah blah."

We need to tighten up some issues on special teams.

I'm not going to throw Danny Pearman under the bus, since I'm not there to observe practice when they go over these things. I do wish we could get on the other side of these issues and benefit from special teams play rather than to get hurt by them.

I believe we will. You have to trust the process with Dabo

He had a vision a long time ago, and it's coming to fruition. He's a great leader and we will be back in the playoffs sooner rather than later. How many teams in the country could line up against Bama, with 3 players suspended, battling injuries, watch very significant impact players dropping throughout the game, and give that type of effort?

I think all of us were confused by the referee's completely inaccurate explanation of the penalty in the 2014 game. I think he literally said the ball 'did not hit the ground.' Both calls were correct technically, but the rule on fair catching an onside kick is just stupid. That should simply not be possible. I think the high school version may require the ball to hit the ground? That may be a better rule.

You are correct. They did say exactly that--the ball never

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:23 AM

hit the ground. That's what gave me the impression that it had to. It doesn't. That only becomes an issue if there is contact with a receiving player who is attempting to catch a ball that has not hit the ground. That is why most onsides attempts are "topped" so the ball hits the ground immediately and bounces high at some point.

Oddly enough it seems like the NCAA is the only

level where the ball does not have to touch the ground first. It does in both high school and the NFL

Guy that caught the ball appeared to be offside to me. But, that's not why we lost the game. As much as it pains me, congrats to Bama who made a few more plays. It took everything in their bag to beat us. Our boys should hold their heads high. See y'all in Tampa!

a fair catch call would have been an option also...

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:19 AM

however, you wouldn't expect a poorly coached unit to know something that obscure, anyway

you have to think of it like a punt

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:27 AM

both are "free kicks". When the ball is in the air (and has not touched the ground), a player has the "right" to catch it unobstructed, no matter if he calls for a fair catch or not.

We all have seen a guy trying to catch a punt get hit, and it's a 15 yard penalty for kick catch interference. Same thing applies on a kickoff. You just rarely see it because nobody can get downfield that fast usually.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg

What you say is true, except for one difference. A punt can

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:37 AM

touch the ground and as long as it's not touched by the receiving team it becomes a dead ball. Kickoffs are always live balls. Unless, of course, they go out of bounds or through the end zone.

David: A fine post. My 2 cents. We will not win a National title until several things occur
1. Our special teams play is terrible for a top ten team We allowed another near 100 yard KO return for a TD.
2. Our special teams coaching is even worse. On the insides kick the players must be coached/told not to retreat until they see the ball is kicked deep. Second, when the kick was made IF the nearest Tiger player had signaled for a fair catch we would have gotten the ball because there would have interred with our right to field the kick.
3. Our safety play last night was again terrible. I don't care if the Defensive coach for that position was All World. It is apparent that the players think run support first and let 2 td's go by them without any chance of us making a play. Again, no national title until that is fixed.

Having said these things, it'll fixable and congrats to the 2015 Tigers for a great season.

Thanks, but I have to point out that a fair catch signal is

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:34 AM

not necessary. If the ball has not touched the ground, the kicking team has to give a receiving player who is attempting to catch it a three-yard cushion. They don't even have to run into him. If he's attempting to catch it in the air and they get too close, it's interference. Unfortunately, we made no attempt to catch the ball.

That's what they mean when they say the receiving team has the "right to catch the ball." You have to make an attempt, though.

Our poor special teams is less about coaching than it is about depth and youth I think. There is a finite amount you can shove into these kids' heads in a single season, and a lot of them were in high school this time last year. You need solid experienced 2nd and 3rd team guys that can focus on ST and we just don't have it - yet. We could also use a crazy good kick returner, but those are increasingly rare. Next year baby!

Did you read where it says the clock stops on 1st down?***

[2]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:43 AM

As you know, that is an entirely separate issue, but since

[1]
Posted: Jan 12, 2016 9:51 AM

you brought it up, the clock did stop although two seconds late. The big screw-up was starting the clock while the umpire was still in the process of spotting the ball. That clusterf**k cost us potentially two plays. Not only should there have been 4 or 5 seconds more on the clock, but we had to burn a TO to stop it. 5 seconds is enough to throw to the sideline. Having the TO means you can run one more play before sending the FG unit. That was p1ss poor of the officials.
