Now that all condolences are in on Lattimore

Oct 28, 2012, 8:43 PM

here is a more practical question, which I posed to my football coach son, and he thought it was an excellent point:

Latt raises his legs and knees high when he runs, a sort of "upright style", choppy looking to me. Does this not make him more vulnerable? Would the NFL scouts take this into consideration as well and do they look at things like this? Surely they do.

Walter Payton, an extremely durable back, ran with low knees that barely lifted. I also noticed that our new offer Fuller out of Easley runs this way - very low knees.

So is Latt vulnerable due to his running style, or was it pure bad luck? Are there studies on this?

Thoughts?

Or has the media made him a target.

It's probably a good thought

Darren McFadden is another who has a very upright style as does Adrian Peterson. They have both had knee issues

Carolina Fan here,

I think is has more to do with his low pad level. It creates a smaller target for defenders to hit, thus they go low on him when trying to tackle him.

One other thing on that play...

if Dooley had challenged the call on the field UT likely gets the ball on a fumble recovery. Granted the play wasn't shown many times, but it sure looked like the ball was out before Lattimore hit the ground.

I think the biggest thing was that with the defender on his

back, he could neither avoid the hit nor set himself up for it.

I think it was just a series of unfortunate events

Defenders often go after legs and if a RB tries to make a jump cut or is standing in a vertical position, a 200 plus pound defender barreling at a knee cap...somethings gotta give.

I think both...his style makes him a huge target

he runs tall and he runs hard so the force is there.

of course that doesn't explain last yr when he got hurt blockig

Always noticed him to stand as straight when running

as anybody I could remember --- Always wondered if he would be better with a different style --- but that was a scary thought --- never thought about the injury aspect until Saturday.

Running style has little / nothing to do with it. I
think the point of this discussion came up only because
Marcus has had two season ending knee injuries, and
some might start questioning whether he did anything
to contribute to his injuries by the way he runs and
moves. However, this was only his first injury during
a run, and it came simply at a point where he was about
to cut. There was one guy pretty much on his back at the
time, and then another guy was trying to bring him down
by hitting him low (as you're taught to do). His knee
was firmly planted with weight on his back as the guy
hit him around the knees. It was an injury ANY player
could go through at any point in their football career.
Unfortunate that it happened once again to Marcus.

Just remember that his injury last year happened on a
Fluke play were he was blocking downfield for a runner
and had his back turned to the Arkansas Player who was
knocked down on the play, and rolled into the back of
Lattimores legs. Again, unfortunate, but had nothing to
do with his "style". Anything can be questioned or discussed
but fact is, It's Football and it was just an unfortunate
circumstance. Nothing more than that
