What is the best way to defend a rub route on goal line?
Jan 18, 2017, 2:32 PM

Should they have played a 2 man zone? For example the outside defender takes the revievrt who cuts outside and the inside defender takes the receiver that cuts inside. The way Alabama had it defended was not going to work.

and thus why they called that play, at least according to Jeff Scott's comments after the game.
On several of the alternate broadcasts there were a number of comments immediately that Bama should have been called for PI against Tay Scott.

Well, I stayed up till 2:00 a.m. watching the post game hooplah. And after watching the play over and over again virtually everybody agreed that Scott did NOT pick his man. In fact. Scott ran an in route in front of his man, and the defender reached out and grabbed Scott and threw him down. And everyone agreed that that was the play for Alabama. To interfere with bad intent any Clemson receiver. Bama didn't care how many interference calls they got. Clemson was out of time.

you cant be awarded a touchdown. DW might have walked in with all the secondary grabbing the receivers tho. it was an rpo and no one left to tackle him

If you are going to play man you have to jam the outside WR but then you risk the fade.

They did this but they needed to jam the inside WR as well not play off like they did. Man can work though IMO.

Alabama D is well known for playing man
Jan 18, 2017, 3:44 PM

That's the big emphasis on Nick Saban's defensive schemes, man defense all the way.
Zone Defense is typically better for slant routes, unfortunately its hard to change zone schemes quickly and it does a poor job of defending good RBs, scrambling QBs, and option schemes.
Man defense is ideal, the only issue is the need to have a very athletic, well conditioned players (particularly LBs that can play pass defense) which Alabama has. The only weakness man defense is venerable to is an offense with excellent blocking schemes, it forces offenses to play physically, which wears them down and opens up potential for offensive penalties (holding).
Our coaches saw this and used the rub rout appropriately to clog up the Alabama DBs when they were on the close yardage goal line.
As Auburn found out with the Kick 6 in 2013, the best way to beat Nick Saban is to manipulate Bama's strengths, i.e. relying on the fact that Saban uses huge, strong (but slow) DBs to cover special team or relying too much on man defense in a vulnerable situation

If you have two receivers man-to-man with two defenders in that situation with DW4 at quarterback, the result is going to be a touchdown.

Scott wasn't trying to make contact with the outside DB that tackled him, he was running a rub route that would make it hard for the inside DB to get to Renfrow. The DB covering him initiated the contact and took him down in just the right spot to delay the other DB.

Well the other important factor is no Safety help. If there is a safety staying home in the middle the corner can cheat or break early to the outside. When it is 1 on 1 with no help you can't cheat or he might break inside of you for an even easier throw and catch.

Best way to defend it is to stay in man coverage but switch receivers. You should be prepared for this type of route with those two WRs out there. Once that receiver moves inside the defender has to drop him off and pick up the receiver going to the flat. This allows you to avoid the contact as the two receivers cross each other.
