So, ole Mariano Rivera is the first player with 100%

Jan 23, 2019, 8:46 AM

on their first HOF ballot. The question is, how many crotchety old writers finally died to make this happen.

Probably after Ken Griffey Jr didn’t get in unanimously...

Jan 23, 2019, 9:10 AM

Some heads rolled.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So far as 100% goes, I think he hurt himself by hanging on

Jan 23, 2019, 9:16 AM

too long. His time as a White Sox is what makes me not trust the front office very much.

Not a baseball fan...

Jan 23, 2019, 9:27 AM

but this means that Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, etc., were not first ballot hall of famers, but a guy who pitches one inning per game he appears in and basically never has to bat was?

Sorry, not unanimous***

Exactly, there have always been a few who refused to

Jan 23, 2019, 9:58 AM

give the vote. I guess they figured it would not matter much. Now I figure they all died.

Just goes to underscore how the old sportswriters

Jan 23, 2019, 9:42 AM [ in reply to Not a baseball fan... ]

were stupid and petty.

I wonder what TheProdigal thinks about it ?

Back when I cared about baseball, he and I had some back and forth on this.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn't matter...

Some people just don't care enough to put in a logical ballot. There are hundreds of voters, so you can imagine it's easy to get one knucklehead.

Ruth? Mantle?

Jan 23, 2019, 10:11 AM [ in reply to Not a baseball fan... ]

How about Jeff Freaking Blauser?

Not as good as Raffie***

Blauser never made the ballot.

Jan 23, 2019, 12:25 PM [ in reply to Ruth? Mantle? ]

Otis Nixon did, thought. Didn't get any votes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The first vote, 1936, Babe Ruth was 2nd, to Ty Cobb.

Jan 23, 2019, 10:20 AM [ in reply to Not a baseball fan... ]

11 voters left Ruth off their ballot, 4 left off Cobb. The first classwas Cobb, Ruth, Wagner, Mathewson, Johnson. But of the 42 other players who got votes, 35 eventually got into the HOF.

Did you know, that after that initial class...

Jan 23, 2019, 10:27 AM [ in reply to Not a baseball fan... ]

It took 26 years for another player to get inducted in his first year on the ballot? Bob Feller and Jackie Robinson were first-ballot HOFers in 1962, then Ted Williams in 1966, Stan Musial in 1969.

It wasn't until the 1980s that first-ballot HOFers became more common.

Did not know that.

Randy Johnson should have been unanimous.

Do you hate golf as well?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. Nothing more exciting than watching the final

Jan 23, 2019, 11:37 AM

2-3 pairings on a Sunday.

Pro baseball sucks though.

NASCAR?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think anything had to happen. He was that good.

Jan 23, 2019, 11:49 AM

Top closer of all-time, so one of the top 15 or 20 players ever.

Still, weird that it was never done before.

Nah, some crusty old guy stopped having a vote one way

Jan 23, 2019, 12:35 PM

or another. That is not to say that he was not the best at what he did. I think most closers would take his worst 4 years as their best.
