New targetting rule

Mar 1, 2019, 5:59 PM

NCAA is expected to stiffen penalties for targeting. 2nd offense of targeting within a season will cause you to miss the rest of the game and the following game.

When are they going to make a similar rule stating that

refs who screw up the call have to miss the rest of the season?

All targeting is reviewed already so that would be a lot of refs out.

I am not fan of that due to how poorly the officials interpret what’s targeting. Too many ‘good’ football hits get called as targeting.

The Tigers will be called more than any other team in the ACC due to the sorry refs this conference has employed.
Maybe they should take a look at the offensive player as they lower their heads quite often as the defensive man is getting ready to make a tackle. When that happens, the offensive player should be called for targeting. Make it fair.

Exactly, you can’t control the Y axis of the offensive player.

Bad idea. Really bad.
And over-reaction as usual.

I could have sworn they were talking about reviewing the rule to make it more realistic/lenient. I guess they decided to go in the opposite direction.

While I agree with doing things to make the game safer, I do think that can be taken too far. Football has always been a heavy contact sport, and due to that there is inherent risk. Removing all the risk will make football boring, and the better players are later greatly rewarded for taking that risk. What will be next, will they outlaw head shots in boxing. It used to just be generally accepted that excelling in sports requires risk. From what I have read, gymnastics has more injuries than football. You can remove all the risk from the sport, but to do so will also remove all the fun, both as players and fans.

I'll say it again... I don't mind the targeting rule....

Mar 1, 2019, 8:20 PM

They(the officials) need to be consistent with that call...
