Sep 22, 2015, 2:06 PM

Terry Allen: Fulfilling a promise

Terry Allen made a promise to his mother that he would get his degree at Clemson, and he keeps his promises. What is the former Clemson great doing back on campus? What are his thoughts on how the game has changed? Allen speaks in-depth with TigerNet about life and football. Full Story »

Great to see he is back at Clemson. Great TD run at FSU in 1989.

I am so glad he is back at Clemson getting his degree and helping the team. I would love to see him stay after he graduates.

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I throw in the faces of my Ohio State and USuC buddies. THIS is why Clemson is a better place than most colleges. We are truly a family. Families value education. It doesn't matter if you played 10 years in the NFL or worked 10 years at WalMart. If you played at Clemson, and left in good standing, the opportunity for you to complete your education is there. It's things like this that separate us from those other universities and make me proud to be a Clemson graduate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the best pure RB I ever saw at Clemson

Sep 22, 2015, 5:35 PM

And I go back to the 70's. TA was the absolute truth in between the tackles and in the open field. Two ACLs cost him a non stop Pro Bowl career. Obviously a great guy too.....proud of him.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have not seen the history you have but stand

Sep 22, 2015, 8:03 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Terry Allen: Fulfilling a promise ]

I know he is the most impressive true RB I've seen at Clemson from the 70s on. And we've had some good ones.

I made this comment on here awhile back and got thumbs-downed and sharply criticized by those who have CJ as best RB ever. Terry Allen was so elusive yet powerful between the tackles with vision as good as Ellington's. He was a great one!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Best Clemson RB of all time ...

Sep 22, 2015, 4:40 PM

I've seen every Tiger running back from Bill Mathis, "Pogo" Usry, and Harry Pavilak, to Hugh "Mustang" Mauldin, Ray Yauger to Buddy Gore and Jackie Jackson, to Lester "Rubber Duck" Brown, through Kenny Flowers and Terrence Flagler, Raymond Priester, and Ronald Williams, all the way to CJ Spiller and Andre Ellington.

IMHO, Terry Allen was the best.

Disclaimer: I did not see Fred Cone and there is certainly an argument for him as well as Banks McFadden although I believe Cone was a FB and McFadden played more the equivalent of today's QB position.

Sep 22, 2015, 7:55 PM [ in reply to Best Clemson RB of all time ... ]

Yes he was & I don't think it's even close. We've had some really great outside runners & some great inside runners. Terry Allen could go anywhere. He could stop on a dime, dart every which way & outrun most defenses. I go back to the late 50s. I didn't see them all but can't imagine any back as good as him. My favorite game of all-time is Georgia at Clemson when TA was there. We're behind w/ a couple of minutes left. We get the ball on our end of the field. Terry Allen right. First down. Terry Allen left. First down. Next thing you know............Down goes the Bulldogs.

Re: New Story: Terry Allen: Fulfilling a promise

Sep 22, 2015, 5:43 PM

I went and looked on YouTube for some of his highlights(88 Maryland). WOW, our offense line was huge and fast, the entire team really. We also threw it more than I remember, guess I didn't pay that much attention to the game itself while I was in school.

That team was the truth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great great RB and love this quote -

Sep 22, 2015, 5:50 PM

"We probably would have had a whole team that would have been suspended" - this is so true having been there during his years! Our players have so much pressure on them away from football so glad Dabo has built a support group like TA to help!

This is great! Terry's story, coming back and getting his degree, his loyalty to Clemson, helping the current student-athletes....everything. Terry was at Clemson at the same time as me and I remember what a dominate player he was...very soft spoken, but very tough.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Love Terry and his commitment...

We are lucky to have Dabo and if we ever lose a game again, remember that.

Can anyone image anything close to this level of commitment at another D1 school. This is why we can pull a 5 star out of Florida. This is uniquely Clemson

I know many lived CJ, but if you saw this guy play, inside as well as out, you get it. Always partial to Flagler as well. I think many don't truly realize the great backs that we have had over the years. Great article.

Great Story!!! Terry Allen was by far my favorite running back at Clemson. I'll never forget how he run on the final drive to set up the winning Treadwell field goal in the '87 Georgia game. I wish we had a rb like him on goal line situations now, he could launch himself from the 3 and land 3 yards in the endzone. Man, he could jump!
